North Carolina List of Carolinian off-roaders

I'm curious to what they changed on Dickey and that part of the loop that's been closed.

They cut 2 new loops. One starts on the backside of Dickey bell and essentially goes in a big loop and bring you out near the Dutch John parking lot (I think), and other one was cut a little ways down from the backside of Dickey. That one is a big loop on the side of the mountain that leads you to the frontside of Dickey bell. They are both fire road like trails. But the one that takes you to the front side Dickey has some decent views of a river leading between two peaks. Dickey itself hasn’t changed much besides guard rails and signs telling people to stay on the trail.

Coming up Daniel. Received a nice deep scratch and a small dent on my half door, was upset about that( time for some armor).
An extra crispy truck was left on Dutch John.
And some more trail damage. Found it while rinsing it down when I got home. No clue how I got home without it completely shearing off.

@Jamesval035 you're extremely lucky you made it home without incident! That is going to be something I keep an eye out for after a trail ride going forward!

To be fair, I did bend the lower bracket a few months ago at Windrock. Hammered it back to shape as much as I could, so it was definitely weak prior to the trip. I’ve had the replacements and Currie mini skids for awhile, guess it’s time to put them on.

I start my welding course at the community college this coming Saturday, but have a buddy that welds so this will be my first assisted weld job

I did that a few years ago, money well spent. The instructor I had let us try a little bit of it all including gas and soldering. I figured out that I love TIG, but can't justify the equipment for just hobby stuff. Is your son taking the class too?

Unfortunately not. They wouldn’t let him sign up since he won’t be 16 when it starts. He turns 16 at the end of August, and they said no exception or waivers.

You were just being more efficient in the removal process. 😂

Started stick welding in class today.

Are you starting from scratch, or do you have a little experience with any welding? Personally, stick is my least preferred method, and I get frustrated with it, but it has its place. Lots of guys say to start with stick first, then TIG won't be so hard.

I have a little 55amp stick at the house that I just broke out of the box last night to try it before I went to class today, so no I have no prior experience. We are progressing from stick to mig. the instructor does stainless steel tig for a living so he said he’s going to teach us.
The hardest part for me was getting the weld started. It’s definitely a technique. Brought a bunch of coupons home to practice my mig on

Guys, my town is having a big festival tomorrow, The BBQ Festival, so I'm thinking about getting out of town for the day. Are any of yall going to be at Uwharrie tomorrow, 10/26? I'm not committed to it, just thinking it's an option to avoid the shutdown.

I intend to get back out there a few times before they close, but IDK if I'll be able to make 12/7 one of those times. Anyone know the close date?

No pics, but the kids and I went riding Uwharrie Saturday afternoon, so I thought I'd give a little report. We only rode on Dickie, the back side of Daniel and the section of the loop in between. It was a busy day, lots of SXS, 4-wheelers/dirt bikes, and 90% of the vehicles riding around were on 35s or bigger. It's currently rutted out pretty bad everywhere compared to early summer, I actually made contact a few times, and that's the first time that has happened off the rocks. It was still pretty wet in most areas, wet enough that I couldn't find traction to climb the rocks on Daniel, another first. There was a muddy water hole on the loop that wound up being deep enough for the water to make contact with my fan while moving, so now I have a hell of a mess to clean under my hood. I used to love playing in the mud, the hours of clean up now just aren't worth it, but my son enjoyed it. We didn't walk down, but from the top, the face of Daniel looked pretty narly. We watched a 4-door and a 2-door JK struggle their way up, with some body damage along the way. It was getting dark at that point, so we headed out.

(@MountaineerTom wasn't with us, but these are the rocks I couldn't get traction on)

I did see something I thought was impressive. When we got to the top of these rock, there was a pile of Jeeps and 1 mid-late '90s Subaru Forester on mud tires. I was legitimately surprised, and it wasn't beat to hell.

BTW, the kids and I were sitting in one of the camping areas off of the gravel road near the top side entrance to Dickie. While we were there a group of guys came out of woods on one of the horse trails draging deer. Are they allowed to hunt in there near the trails?

I’m headed up there today to camp for the weekend.
