Colorado Krew Hangout

Yeah lol rain is good but this is miserable. I don't think we live out here because we don't care to see the sun...

You can always rip some dirt roads in rampart lol. that's all I've gotten out for this year too, kinda lame.

I've got my own hidden dirt roads I've been cruising. There's plenty around me if you know where to go. But I got in trouble with the principal of our local high school for playing in the mud in a dirt lot by the school. So there goes that spot until summer break.

Wow that was fast. Who did you order through? And your locker survived that?

Speedway motors in Lincoln NE. The FedEx driver left it on the curb because it was too heavy. Lol It's only 90 pounds. I took the locker apart and cleaned it up. Looks fine. The bearing caps are twice as thick and it has the bigger bearings too.

I ordered a whole 9 inch assembly, swapped out my locker into it, and put it back together. The parts were ordered on a Friday and were here on Monday.

Wait... what? You can just buy a new gear assembly basically as a bolt on part for that axle? Ford 9" rear?

My guess is yeah, and cost. 3rd member with LSD for 1k

Yeah I was looking at them and they seem very reasonably priced, especially if you take into account labor and parts for a shop to do a regear. A Ford 9 inch would be complete overkill for me but definitely seems like it'd be a much better option than a Dana 60 down the road. I am also curious aboyr why it's not more widespread.

What's the advantage of it? Just so stuff like regearing isn't as much of a pain in the ass or what?

It's all just tradeoffs, but if the deciding factor was regearing I wouldn't bother as that's a fairly infrequent need unless there was some magic ratio it unlocked. I think the 9" is more comparable to the Dana 60 than what I have (Dana 44). But I've honestly not done a deep dive as I was able to get my axles where I want them to be in phases and didn't need to consider anything else enough to get there.

That's a fair point. Yeah I've always seen them as being the equivalent of a Dana 60 and whatever the GM one is but a decent bit lighter. But it's gonna be a long time until I'm even considering axles that big if I ever am at all, so haven't looked into them much either. My 44 is more than enough for now.

Yep, preassembled whole 3rd member with a spool, which I swapped for my Yukon Grizzly, and new gears. By the time you buy the gears, bearings, carrier and the whole 3rd member, it was about the same price as individual parts.

As for a Ford 9 inch, they went from the late 50's to late in the 80's. They come. Stock in 28 spline and 31 spline. They make kits up to 40 spline. The 31 spline shafts are rated to 800 horse power. There are tons of aftermarket stuff too.

All of the F150s had a 9 inch in the 60s through the 80s.

Curry axles, front and rear are basically Ford 9 inch. Off road racers use them, drag racers and most custom cars do to, so why not?
