It's all about me

There's a few places in New Mexico that are "undiscovered". One in particular is a small petroglyph site. I think the only reason these sites are pretty much undisturbed is because they are not near any large populations and they are not near any popular attractions. Years ago my boy and I were camping and fishing and we met a local rancher who showed us the petroglyphs. I have since forgotten exactly where they are and could not find them today.

It's really sad to see people leaving trash and destroying the the beautiful places that they visit . This is the main reason places get closed to all of us who love and respect our public lands .

I guess part of it is the larger population we have now, and more people that can get out there.

It’s not just the latest generation things like this have been happening for years. I’ve been hiking the Sierra for over 30 yrs and saw people disrespecting nature on most trips. My hiking partners and I had a saying “You meet the nicest people 2 days in”. We once climbed Mt Whitney from the south. This required a permit with a limit of 8 hikers. As we went up the first 12+K pass from the trail head we kept picking up mylar energy bar wrappers. When we got to the top there was a group of 20+ people some eating energy bars with the same wrappers. We confronted them about it, the wrappers and the number if people. They were indignant. Turns out it was a group Sponsored by the Sierra Club. 2 days latter on the morning of our final accent of Whitney we went through our campfire and picked out all the unburnt trash and packed with us. 4 miles or so up the trail a ranger came up the trail yelling at us to stop. She had an unburnt aluminum gum wrapper and started berating us about leaving trash behind in the fire pit. We showed he our baggy with the trash we pulled out of the ashes. We were dumfounded that she chased us down 4 miles up the trail for a gum wrapper that was not ours someone threw it in our fire ring after we left. There were 6 of us told her about the Sierra Club hikers and we basically told her to pound sand. The toilet paper visible usually stops 2 days in when it’s only serious hikers.

You are correct , this has been going on for years . It's the same with people throwing trash all over the roadside . I can remember the tv commercials from the early 1970's addressing the issue of littering .

The absolute best part of those commercials was the Italian actor pretending to be a sad Indian.
