Is Rock Hard 4x4 rear tire carrier / bumper still the overall recommendation?

That one is less offensive, as far as tire carrier bumpers go. But I still despise them, especially at that price 😳

Why not go with a tailgate mounted spare and new rear bumper of your choice?

A tailgate-mounted spare is a recipe for disaster, especially in this case where it's a 35. #1: the weight will put severe strain on the tailgate and it's hinge, even if it's reinforced. #2: the clearance you'd need to clear a bumper, even one with a dropped middle section, may not even be possible, even with a plate that raises the spare a couple inches. I'd go with a swing-arm.

Fortunately, we have figured that stuff out a long time ago and can continue to reliably hang our 35s off the tailgate.

$729.99 with the offset tire and mount for a jerry can. It comes bare - you need to paint it (I used gloss black spray-paint).

This is what I'm running on my TJ. He offers it with the spare centered for a little cheaper, or offset (like the old flatties) so you can run a Jerrycan if you want (great if you're overlanding with your TJ or doing a long trail day).

Bumper comes with a 2" receiver hitch, and D-ring mounts welded along with the swing away spare tire carrier.

I am late to this thread. I use a Rockhard 4X4 rear bumper and swing-away tire carrier with jerry can mounts. The welds are good, as is the finish. It does not rattle or squeak. The swingaway latch is easy to use. I use a "skinny" 255/85R16 spare rather than a full size 315/75R16 to keep the spare tucked a bit tighter to the tailgate and save a few pounds.

I am in general not a fan of tailgate mounted spares because hanging that much weight on side opening tailgate hinges can create more problems than solutions. I have no issue with a swingaway carrier that doesn't rattle or squeak and can handle the weight of the spare and jerry cans without sagging when the swingaway is open. In that aspect the Rockhard product is better than competitors' with swingaway design.

My opinion of the Rockhard 4X4 rear bumper system is positive. I have no complaints. Whether or not it is the "best" alternative is purely subjective. Internet debates over whether a product is "the best" typically quickly degenerate into meaningless pissing contests that I am not interested in entering.

My opinion is that the purchase of the Rockhard 4X4 bumper and tire carrier would not be a mistake. Whether it is best for your purposes is something only you can decide.

Now I am (also) really late to the thread but I did a search and found this. I bought and have the Poison Spyder set up and I hate it. It's been on the dd for a couple of years and I have to have a chunk of radiator hose to protect my tailgate edge and now the spring has broken in the sing-away post so I have a bungee cord holding it to keep it from swinging too far and having my spare slam into the rear fender and the side of my Jeep or winging into the car next to me in a parking lot (had some drama at Costco when it first broke at Christmas and it wasn't a fun time with a big audience of people in the lot). It has always rattled really badly, which I haven't been able to correct and has always been a PITA to use. I really like the Rock Hard skids I put on my JK so I started looking at their bumper to replace it. I like that it seems to have a chunk of metal as a keeper so the spare tire carrier can't over extend as mine is currently doing.

I just installed the rockhard tire carrier last month and I’m loving it so far.

Everything about it is very high quality and has been holding my 35s on beadlocks with issues or noises.

I just ordered a new latch for mine (old model) since being rear ended. The spare section pushed in the tailgate (bodyshop replaced) but beyond the lilift bolt on the left being bent and the latch being buggered, the carrier itself shrugged it off.

I DID notice just now that the bottom rubber bumpers have never been within 1" of the carrier, so all that was keping it from pushing on the tailgate was the upper snubber.

Also I have no idea if it's been improved since mine was made, but the powdercoat did not hold up so well against the rust. It is still solid and I plan to brush it and rattlecan.

Oh, and the 2" hitch hole is useless as you cannot put anything into it without immediately hitting the frame. (I have a curt below it.)

My Warn receiver shackle bracket fits my Rockhard rear bumper without any issue.

So does my drop hitch, although I did need to cut it a bit shorter for the hitch pin holes to align.

Yeah that's the thing, the holes. Yes you can technically put a hitch in the bumper, but not deep enough due to the pin hole.

Your solution was mentioned in Post #110 - Cut the shank of the hitch a bit shorter so the holes align without the assembly touching the frame crossmember..

Problem solved.

If you are concerned about the strength of the hitch after cutting material from the tubular hitch shank (not really a concern), you can cut a forged hitch with solid shank instead. The result will be similar to the Warn receiver hitch shackle mount, which fits the Rockhard rear bumper without modification.
