Greetings everyone. I'm a new TJ owner (1999 2.5 manual transmission), the vehicle has 130,000 miles on it. The previous owner didn't use it enough and it sat unused for a year or two so it has the associated issues that come from not being used. I have put about 1000 miles on it since I purchased it and there's a few issues I have noticed I was hoping to get some help with.

1. The vehicle will sometimes idle very rough and sound like it's going to stall out. And also randomly does this at times when I shifted into fourth gear. Most times the sputtering seems to regulate fade off after a minute or so, initially chalked us up to old gas in tank.

2. The previous owner removed catalytic converter and muffler and straight pipes it. I paid to.get a new exhaust manifold and muffler installed but not a new cat.(Florida)

3. On top of it running rough, it is excessively fumey (so bad that your clothes smell like exhaust terribly after riding it). To me, I am thinking that the excessive exhaust smell is from running very rich(it also drinks fuel). It is throwing codes P0135 Sensor Heater Circuit Bank sensor 1 as well as P0141 Sensor Heater Circuit Bank sensor 2. From what I understand these are related to the oxygen sensors?

I realize that with no cats I will be throwing a downstream oxygen sensor code, but that should not affect the way the vehicle runs? Are these codes related to the upstream oxygen sensor which I understand could cause rough idling?

I bought the Jeep for relatively cheap($3,000) so I realized that there would be some maintenance costs associated with getting her back to where she should be.

I would like to do as much work on this myself as possible but I'm new to the world of Jeeps. What service manual does everyone recommend me getting?

Entirely possible you have an exhaust leak. Jeeps are notorious for cracking exhaust headers.

A little Seafoam through the brake booster tube will show you all the leaks.

Thank you. Do you think that

Thanks. I just replaced the exhaust manifold as it had multiple leaks. Is there something else that may be leaking?

I paid a muffler shop and they did a smoke test and said they cured all the leakage.

Here’s the P0135 test parameters if you want to break out the multimeter. Should be 1/1 from my earlier diagram.

I'd check their work and make sure bolts and nuts are tight.
