Help With LED Kitchen Hood Light

My existing florescent light has become dull so I removed it and bought a replacement LED tube. Installed it and it will not light up, thought maybe it was defective so I took it back and got another one. Installed and the same thing it will not light up, so I reinstalled my old florescent light and it comes on so I know it is not a power issue. The new one is just a hair shorter than the old one is this enough to make it not work or should I be looking at something else ??

I assume you removed the ballast and re-wired accordingly?

As 101 stated there are 2 types of LED retrofit tubes, type A which works with your existing ballast or type B where you bypass the ballast. The pin length is fine as the contacts are not in the end of the tombstones but in the curved recesses where the pins twist in.

Which kind did you buy? Do you know if the old one has a starter like pictured below? How old is this hood?

Since that LED requires a ballast, are you sure that your original problem wasn't the ballast being worn out, rather than the bulb? You may need to replace the ballast.

And your old tube was a T-8, not a T-12 right? What about a starter? If you have a starter the LED will not light unless you insert an LED starter, which is basically a jumper, meaning you can also just wire around the starter to eliminate it.

edit: I see in the pic your old one is a T-8. The only thing I can think of is your old one uses a magnetic ballast and starter, if so the starter needs to be removed and the socket shorted either by cutting and splicing the wires or inserting a LED starter. If that's not it I don't know what to advise except trying a different brand.

If you have an electronic ballast it should work, there is no starter with an e-ballast.

If possible it's always better to go with direct wire (type b) and wire around the ballast. Then you never have to worry about ballast failures.

Yes that's it! Push it in and twist, it will come out. Then replace with an LED "dummy" starter if it's too hard to open the fixture and bypass. It's possible the new LED tube is damaged from trying to use it with the fluorescent starter.

You could also take the old starter apart and convert it
