Gear pattern check

Ok... dropped the pinion shim from .020 to .018. Backlash went to .12.

Going to pull the passenger carrier bearing and add a few thou to tighten up the backlash.

My read on the pattern is the pinion is too far away... meaning add pinion shims. Right, wrong?

Mac, don't run a pattern unless your backlash is in spec. It will only make you chase your tail. Any time you change pinion depth you have to adjust the backlash.

Reading a pattern that doesn't have the backlash in spec is a waste of time!

Spec is .006 to .012 right?

Spec is .006 to .010.

Put the pinion shims back to .22.

That put the backlash to .010. Pattern shows too close again.

Think I need to adjust the carrier bearing shims.

Agreed. Spec is 0.005-0.008 and try to hit the center of that if I can.

Order some national bearimgs from RA, flappy wheel the inner race till slip fit. Clean off all the gear oil and start again.

Getting closer...moved carrier shims... passenger is .43 now and driver is .50. Than from passenger .40 and driver .60.

Backlash is .005. Pinion is .19.

More work to do tomorrow. Need heat in the shop.

Definitely getting closer👍 just a touch deep now.

I know when were discussing some other axles...shaved 14 bolt I think...we were discussing how some folks preferred slightly deep.

Thoughts or just remove a thou from the pinion.

Did that on an earlier pattern (didn't post pictures.)

Your compound is so thinned out it makes interpretation really tough. It also doesn't look like you are holding much pressure when turning it. You may be, it just doesn't look like it. The best thing you can do right now is to clean the ring gear and reapply a very LIGHT coat of marking compound. I mean like, wipe as much as you can off the brush and then wipe the teeth. Do you have any more compound that you can make a new batch from? You only need to add gear oil enough to slightly thin it.

I'm sure you must be getting close, but I just can't give a good confirmation or not.

This is what I'm talking about. (Red line) There is no distinct pattern, it's all over the place. (Green line) The buildup at the root didn't allow for visual of the pattern AT the root.

If the pattern was oval, or sunrise/sunset, it would be more distinct. The current pattern just shows squiggly lines, partially because the compound is running down the face of the tooth since it's too thinned out.
