Does anyone have a recommendation for a Dana 44 diff and pinion skid plate? Mine is getting beat up a bit and I'd like to save them with a couple hundred dollar parts than the cost of the new axles.

I remember seeing Victor had done this:

I cannot find it but I think I remember Garrett talking about hardfacing the diff itself since he had seen the plates getting ripped off

Taking those bolts out should not cause a leak. But, while you're half way there, might as well change out the diff oil and either reseal it with gasket maker or buy a lube locker. One complaint, okay two if you factor in the loss of ground clearance, is you have to take that skid off to service the diff. So do it now and then you're good for a while.

I've already got the lube locker gasket. I may buy them and hold off until I get 500 miles on the new gears and need to change the fluid.

I noticed this afternoon while under the Jeep that the rear diff drain plug has been ground down a bit already 😆. Thankfully it's a 3/8" ratchet plug

Some guys here have simply built up the cast steel with weld beads. It is tougher than the housing. @jjvw ?

That is all I did. I cut a bunch of grooves in the housing where the rocks have worn away material and covered it all up with a layer of beads. Better to do it now than after the bolt threads are exposed.

I don't like the idea of a diff skid because it takes away ground clearance.
