There is no rule that says will call items can't be packed for shipping and packed very well.

A fun game my wife and I play is to give random/ terrible gifts at weddings with a personalized card. This summer I found a candy dish at goodwill and scribbled a message about the groom eating from there all the time as a child and we wanted them to have it to start their new life together and made the "from" name illegible.

I would have included a very large jar of shelled peanuts, non salted.

Then a very nice card with this printed out and stuck to the last page.
