Frame rot: how far gone is it?

Chain was off of a 3 foot Florissant light fixture.

A what light fixture??

I think he meant Fluorescent. Florissant is a town in Missouri. ;)

Damn! That town is everywhere.

It's actually named after the town in MO. A dude from there came and started the town and just named it the same as the town he was from according to this history book in the local coffee shop. People were creative back then!

Lesson 1: Do not buy a Jeep that has spent any time in the road salt (or maybe brine) states.

(General advice to anyone; not meant to make our Yankee friends feel bad.)

You can find decent ones up here, but it takes a lot of patience and some luck. I couldn't tell you how many i looked at until i found a decent one, and its certainly not perfect, it just doesn't have any frame issues.

In general tho, I agree, it's worth the trip or shipping to get one from a no salt state.

As for the OP: Those pics are almost impossible to tell what is going on. It's been said, but go around the frame with a pall peen, or better yet, chipping hammer. Don't be shy and give it decent whacks. You can hear it when it's really bad, and in the case of a chipping hammer, it will almost certainly just go right thru the frame. Always ask the owner before you do this lol, some will think you are "ruining" their frame. If a hammer goes thru, it's already ruined.

I looked at a Rubi a couple of weeks ago. In one area they used something like black gorilla tape to cover a 6" ish rust hole in front of the rear lower passenger control arm.

When you’re done and get it all washed out use the Eastwood internal frame coating (must be good stuff I did mine about 4 years ago) and when I installed a new rivnut it still looked good.just tape all the holes except the one to install the tube, and make sure you do it in the grass the stuff will not come off of concrete!

Do you remember how many cans you went through?

I did my frame front to back and used 3 cans per side. I taped up all the frame holes and still managed to ruin my new shoes when it dripped.

I did about the same number of cans, failed to appreciate the wisdom of taping the holes, and when the tip of that snake found its way to one of the holes it poked its head out and shot me directly in the eyeball 👁️

It sucked in ways I cannot articulate

Hi guys,
I’ve been following this forum for years now but haven’t joined/made a post until now. I, like many here, am thoroughly concerned about frame rust on my tj. Until this past week I wasn’t aware of the no drain holes issue that the bright minds at chrysler have left us with. I got an endoscope to inspect my frame and the pictures attached are what it looks like. For reference the biggest scales are about quarter sized. Does this look really bad? Will cleaning it, clog hog, drilling drainholes, and coating with eastwood or fluidfilm just be prolonging the inevitable? Should I cut my losses and look for a clean rubi from the southwest? The outside of the frame is spotless as I have been militant about cleaning, wire brushing, and coating with encapsulator and fluidfilm but I was caught a bit off guard by the inside of the frame. This jeep spent about 6 years in Pennsylvania so I assume that’s where most of this rust happened. All of these pictures are between the control arm mounts on each side, it’s spotless above them front and back. Cheers!

Rust is funny stuff. You can get up to a 10 to 1 radio of scale to lost parent metal in a chloride environment. I would buy one of the $90 UT (ultrasonic thickness) readers off Ebay or Amazon and check the frame. You will need to clean the spot you are going to test with a sanding disk just to shinny clean and use mineral oil on the transducer. They come with directions. A handy gadget to have for something like this. Might not be as bad as you think or ? The ball pen hammer method is the old way to test thickness but that requires a lot of practice and skill by the operator.
