I've searched a bunch of radio/sound threads here on this forum, last year while lurking about, but haven't seen the issue I am having. If I missed it, please forgive, and maybe point me in the right direction.

2006 LJ, factory head unit, factory sub-woofer, factory amplifier, factory speakers. All works well when the ambient temperature is warm outside, and I don't feel like I need an upgrade. When it gets 40 or so, I get an annoying hum out of the sub-woofer. Sounds like a short, and the rest of the speakers go silent. If I take out the fuse for the sub-woofer, the radio works fine, just no sub-woofer. I bought a new sub-woofer speaker, no help, (paper cone was probably on it's way out anyhow). Swapped out the head unit to another Chrysler factory head unit, (Direct replacement), no help, (buddy's radio, no cost to try). Bought a brand new head unit from Crutchfield, no help. Hunted down, found, and installed factory amplifier, no help, (not an easy find). The last couple years, I just pulled the fuse in late fall, and reinstalled in mid-spring. What I don't want is to throw money at it with new equipment, to find out that there is something messed up in the wiring. Am I off base here, missing something obvious??

Likely a short
If the rest of the speakers went silent, its traveling back to the headunit (source) and frying the circuit fed by those also

Eliminate the problem, or replace it
Seems like youve replaced everything else already

To troubleshoot the wiring quick and easy disconnect it at both ends and string a temporary cable from the HU to the sub. Sometimes it's easier to just abandon bad wires in place and run new however you can route them.

Just realized that I didn't get back to this problem. It's now winter again, and I just pulled the fuse a couple of months back. I do appreciate the replies.

Better to find the short or just run new wiring to the sub. Not that difficult.
