EV thread

I don't particularly care about this video. The ones that got my attention a couple years ago was the child size dummies getting run over without the tesla even stopping.

That also occurs in the full video for the Tesla (not the car using lidar). But again, the tesla is apparently using older software.

Theres more to the video than just crashing through the wall. I haven't watch thed full video but i believe the video demonstrates how a competitor car uses lidar to detect objects in the road versus Tesla's old software which uses its cameras computer vision to detect objects. The Tesla failed all the tests the competitor car passed. No one seems to really know why he used Tesla's older software vs their new software but he's getting shit for it not being an accurate comparison.

I get that - but again, who cares?

My 13 month old Kia Niro hybrid already has 60k on it. I’m thinking in two years I sell it myself at 160-180k rather than trade and consider a Model Y long range, or a more advanced hybrid crossover for a work car. Probably 1 year old with very low miles. Let someone else pay most of the depreciation.

Lots can happen in evolution in 2 years. I want max MPG, comfort, and cargo space.

Trying to game my companies vehicle plan in my favor. They pay my like I’m getting 25mpg. I’ve average a legit 43.5 since ownership and I drive like normal. In three years they basically buy me a car and I get to keep the residual value as profit.

I’d drive a Tesla.

Did you put all those miles on it yourself?

Was 7 months old with 7k miles when I acquired it. So no, but the majority (53k) of them. I average 4k or so a month for work / personal. The Ram 2500 sits in the barn until I need it. Guided a Jeep Jamboree in Hot Springs AR last weekend with @gasiorv. Got 6.4 mpg round trip towing 15k or more.

You can find some good deals on used Teslas right now...

You seem to be doing double what I do, but I only drive my work car for work purposes, legit. (it's a boring Civic that I spend too much time in any way) I average 100 miles/day. Are you liking the hybrid for that amount of driving? I'm totally against EV, but I would consider a hybrid if the price was right.

I'm trying to play the tax deduction game. Last year the standard deduction per mile was $0.545/mile IIRC. My Civic cost $0.20-25/mile to own and operate, so obviously it's in my favor to run Civics. I'd be surprised to find something with a lower cost. I think last year I had a $13,500 deduction on my nearly 15-year-old, 300,000 mile Civic. I've been calling that car "The Money Printer".

The Prius is the king of low cost to operate without range limitations. But of course then you're driving a Prius.

No doubt! Only minor damage from fire and being hit with picket signs...

I did find it comical what he did with Twitter. Especially since I don't use the site. I know he has billions, but don't see how aligning with Trump and alienating every Democrat (and then some) can be good for business.

Seemingly overnight, Teslas have gone from being the top choice for the environmentally conscious, to being a target for anyone that doesn't support Trump/Musk. My wife considered a Tesla when she got her SUV. Right now, I'm glad she's not driving one.

Maybe it will blow over, but I'm curious to see what all the negative publicity does for Tesla and his other businesses.

I like the Kia Niro, 2023 and up was the model change. Much nicer looking. Was $10k less than a comparable Prius and is a small crossover style car so higher roof, hatchback with fold down seats, lots of tech. Picked mine up for $25k with 7k miles on it. So far no issues other than a recall that I need to take it in for. It’s not affecting the car so it not a priority.

I’ll keep it two more years or so.

If the manufacturers can do that, then eventually car thieves will be able to as well.

Interesting observation. A Ford big-wig made that statement within the previous 5 years. I wonder how long it will be before someone hacks a Tesla and drives it remotely. I remember seeing a video of a hacker group pre 'vid take control of a new car, a BMW I think. That car couldn't drive itself, but the "hackers" could remotely start it, turn on and off things like lights and wipers, and do stuff like that all remotely through factory systems.

I don't think most people appreciate how much of a computer these things literally are and how much data flows between their connected smartphone, the car and many unknown 3rd parties, essentially subcontractors for connectivity services provided by the vehicle. Ripe for stealing data and control hacking.

True with the Ford. I saw no reason to connect to the Tesla since there's no carplay functionality.

First of all: You have a Tesla?

He recently rented one.

BTW @Apparition I did a quick look into used Teslas seeing if I thought they could keep up with my work demands, and I don't think the standard range could do it. Reading through, it seems like half of the owners of 4-6 year old vehicles were saying their cars could only do 150ish miles on a full charge. That might just be online hear-say, but it is something. EV battery replacement is no joke,
