I need to do an engine swap on my 2004 4.0L 6 cyl automatic.
I've been looking at some on marketplace that the engines are in great quality but the frames rusted out. I was wondering if automatic versus manual mattered. I read on google that the bellhousing bolt pattern can be different. And I know that the mounting brackets are in different places after doing a frame off restoration on my buddy's '99 manual TJ a few years ago. I also saw one that its in a right hand driver mail jeep. Can you pull an engine from a right hand driver and put it in a left hand driver?

I can help a little, but I am sure there are others with way more experience than me. I swapped mine almost exactly two years ago (I did it on the street in the snow over a few weekends December - January) I have a 2000 and I used an engine from a 2004. I got mine from Baseline 4x4. You can put in your info on their website and they will show you compatible engines, so even if you don't buy from them, maybe that will let you know which ones will work. They were good to work with and I would use them again if I needed to and have no problem recommending them to others. They will only ship engines under a certain mileage, I can't remember the cutoff, but they only had one that was under when I was looking. They did not specify and I did not ask which transmission it had, so I don't *think* it matters. I have the VIN and I just pulled the build sheet from Jeep and it came with the 5 speed and I have a 5 speed, so maybe I just got lucky. RHD I have no clue.

Since you have an '04, I would think a 2000-2004 TJ or 1999-2004 WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0 engine would be a safe bet. The engine blocks will be the same for manual vs. automatic, you will just need to swap the accessories on yours over to the donor engine. For a RHD, the engine blocks are probably the same but the accessories and brackets are all different. I can't say for sure, so it might not be worth the gamble.
