Engine noise and potential options

Yesssss very helpful. Now, here's the kicker... If the brand new timing chain isn't making any noise do I bother...?

Probably not what you want to hear but it would be worth it to me to get the tensioner pad back in there just so the knowledge that it's not in there wouldn't be itching in my brain forever.

My 99 had what I believed to be a lifter tap the entire 4 years and 20k miles I had it. It was annoying but not enough to pull the head and change them out.

Yes I mean that I thought there was 1 more bolt behind the pulley. I think the water pump might be one of the only things in my life I've ever sealed that didn't leak afterwards so didn't want to pull it if I didn't have to.

I'm kidding of course but it sure feels like I've got about a 50 percent success rate sometimes, which is nuts because I hate doing shit twice and I give a damn.

Think you could get a socket on that thing if you were to pull the belt pulley off the water pump?
Not sure where you are on this now, but at least with the engine on the stand, once that pulley is removed you've got a pretty clean shot at everything. The tensioner is kind of in the way, but you could pull and force it out of the way or just take it off as I think its one bolt holding it on.

I am so with freedom_in_4low I can't say it enough, I'd have to do it. In fact, once I saw that it was missing I would've torn it right back apart, but i am very picky about shit like that.

With the above comment about pulling the fan pulley I'm more than likely to do it before too long.

Tensioner is a non issue, I've got family members and a breaker bar for that.
