I purchased a rear Dana 44 from an 03 TJ Rubicon that had had an Eaton E locker installed. How can I identify if it's a new or old style e-locker?

Don't see any identifying marks

I believe this is correct. It was called the Elocker4 when it came out.

The one pictured has four gears, therefore is the newer style.

Fwiw, the nissan xterra and frontiers were available with D44s and elockers also with early versions coming with two spiders and later ones getting four, mine had the 4 spider version, and i witnessed a guy blow up a 2-spider version when one tire slipped off a rock and transferred all the torque through the side opposite the lock up side. The elocker only locks the spider on one side, therefore the locking action on the opposite axle gets transferred through the spider gears and is a weak point on the two spider version.

Dang, I was trying to find one of those Pro-4X Xterra i could afford before I got my jeep. Interesting that they had a Dana 44 and Eaton.

I just missed out on an 06 6-speed rubicon before i moved on to the xterra option. The nissan m226 was a Dana 44 variant, but not exactly. it only came with the offroad/pro-4x and manual models. it had a different cover (2 less bolts) but still used the same SET10 axle bearings as a jeep Dana 44. I found my 2010 used with under 6k miles on it, and wheeled it in Big Bend, Moab a few times, and colorado as well as many trips to central texas. sold it after ten years and 150k+ miles
