Has anyone tried one of these type cutting wheels on thicker materials? When I was finishing my shop in an existing pole barn I was too cheap to buy a nibbler for one time use, so I put one of these in my grinder and cut 100’s of feet of steel siding with it when abrasives barely lasted 10 feet. I got too cocky with it and towards the end of the project bent it, so I never got around to trying it on thicker material but I’m about to start my mid-arm and wondering if I should pick up another or just deal with the suck that is abbrasives?

I have the Lennox version and I've only used it to cut galvanized roofing which I believe was 29 gauge, what gauge was the siding? If you want abrasive disks to cut better, throw a lot less black crap everywhere and last longer get good quality thin ones. My two favorites are Makita 5" and Pferd 4.5". With the cheap thick ones 1/2 the energy is going into reducing the disc in a hurry.

I’m not sure on the siding, just run of the mill pole barn stuff. For $20 I think it’s worth a shot.

I've used the Avanti Pro discs with good results. They're blue discs and $2-3/ea.

As far as grinding to get the frame cleaned up of the old mounts, these blow everything out of the water...

Yes sir, those and flap disks have prevented me from using an abrasive grinding wheel for at least 10 years. Well stocked up on those, although I’m using Benchmark Abrasives discs, not 3M’s.
