I'm doing gears on my LJ and went with Revolution Gears. I dont think the Master Install kit has enough pinion depth shims to fine tune my depth. OEM was .057 and I only got 5 total shims in the install kit and the smallest is .005. Where can I buy additional shims and more variety of sizes? Im calling Rev Gear tomorrow and making sure I got the whole package I was supposed to, but wanted to check on what other have done. Thanks.

Thanks for the link. However, the shims I'm looking for go behind the pinion bearing race and their OD is roughly 3.0". I found a kit on Quadratec that comes with 10 or 12 shims. I'm going to try that kit and see what it comes with.

East coast gear sells a Dana 44 shim kit also, comes with carrier, pinion race and preload shims.

This pains me to hear. Their gears are awesome, the master install kits not so much.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to try the Crown kit from QT and see what it comes with. I might also have to reuse pinion preload shims, as there were only 5 of those shims too.

I did something similar with a few of those sheets in different thicknesses for a R&P install I did on my truck recently.

Hopefully OP doesn’t run into the same issue.

To clarify, you're saying the sheets are a good idea or bad?

I went to the local driveline shop and they had 0.003 and 0.005 shims. My rebuild kit was the same, thinnest was 0.010" which sorta sucked. Revolution didn't respond to my email even...

Check out my build thread, went in circles with @hosejockey61 and found a good pattern with his help. Need to finalize things when I'm back from vacation.

In my growing experience, master install kits from various sources commonly come with not enough shims. A local gear shop will often have them. Certainly keep/reuse your old ones which are in decent condition.

I’d say it’s definitely worth doing if you can’t find a shim stack that works. I didn’t want to spend the time or money shopping around finding some that may have worked just to find out they didn’t. I ordered a few sheets of different thicknesses and cut out a stack that got me where I needed to be.

Crown package was a bust. I got 5 pinion race depth shims, all the same thickness and 5 pinion preload shims, all the same thickness. But I also got about 10 pinion bearing shims, but I didn't open the package. Shipping it back and trying a OEM Spicer kit.

I got one from east coast gear, seems like a pretty good variety, I can measure and see if any specific thicknesses if looking for anything in particular

I opened up the one I got from East Coast gear, it has a good variety of pinion race shims, all the way down to .001, probably 20 total of various thickness, a bunch of pinion preload shims also. The shims it had for carrier are not the right ones for a rubicon locker though, they are the smaller shims that would go on carrier before pressing bearings.

This is the part if helps you out.

Thanks for all the replies. I've gotten the ECG and the Spicer kits and ready for install. I'll report back if I have other issues.
