I think it started during Covid with all the 'work from home' going on. I prefer it most of the time because if there's a problem, I can tell them to bring me their laptop, vs. a desktop I have to go see them.

It also helps with desk space. I work at a high school. Some people don't have assigned desks, just a laptop. So they can sit anywhere and work, do training classes, etc. Some areas are shared depending their shift. So some have a docking station, screen, keyboard and mouse. They take their laptop with them. The next shift will connect their own laptop.

That makes some sense with your situation. I always told people that, "If you need a laptop, buy a laptop. But if you don't, don't." Then I'd show them what was in my repair lab, mostly laptops. Never had nearly as many problems with desktops.

Definitely some truth to that. Some people would be better off with a desktop, don't share an office, always in the same place. If I wanted to order a desktop, and put those reasons into the request, it would still be denied unless they needed specialized hardware.

Edit: Linux is now installed, and I'm actually on this site with it right now. It'll probably take me weeks to get everything moved over and setup the way I want it - then I can decommission the old computer.

I really like the interface for Zorin.

The new PopOS Cosmic is pretty good too but I've only messed with it once.

Whichever version you have, try the Strawberry music player.

If it's not available, Clementine is similar.

And then of course the mandatory Wobbly WIndows extension. :cool:

My desktop runs an Ubuntu spin-off named Linux lite.
The whole "just work" thing is fairly much there with Ubuntu.

Pretty much. Last nite, I found a way to fix bash's sub-standard command recall. I've been carping for years that today's bash doesn't have features that 4DOS had 30 years ago. I was able to fix that partially last nite which makes me VERY happy.

Still "moving in", transferring data over a janky wi-fi connection. Am using only one small monitor currently - which makes me feel like I'm using a smartphone. Need to get the other two larger ones connected ASAFP.
 
I've been using Fedora for the last few years after bouncing around to different distros. I had Opensuse TW on another laptop and really liked it as well. It's 'rolling' so you never have to do major updates.

I also like MX Linux (XFCE) for VM's and older PC's. Very low system requirements for potato PC's.

I also have a little android tablet sitting around, I'm going to try get it to run as a 5th monitor. Maybe I'll just keep an instance of "top" running on it.
