I have a 1999 TJ that doesn’t have back seats. I bought it that way some years ago. Does anyone know if I can install a child seat in the front passenger seat here in Ontario, Canada? I would be turning off the passenger airbags. This isn’t long-term. My daily driver is in the shop for a few days and I would just be driving my 5 year old child to school. I’ve tried calling the Ministry of Transportation and Service Ontario, but no one seems to know the answer.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Man, Canadians are such pussies.

Turn off the airbag (via key or fuse), slide the seat all the way back, and ensure your kid is in the correct seat for their height and weight. Done.

There's loads of vehicles without back seats warranting a best effort kind of case.

So , how does the kid car seat get secured with the TJ seatbelt without the ability to pull the kid seat against the seat back ?

And this is coming from someone who rode in the back of a pickup with a shell as a kid .

Luxury rear seats.

If it's the baby size there's loops the seat belt traces through that go over the kid. If it's the bigger one the seat belt traces through plastic openings on the back and the car seat has its own seat belt.

Isn’t that the exact reason some TJs were equipped with an airbag on/off switch, so that child seats could be placed in the front seat if the back seat was removed…?

Exactly, every vehicle i have owned that had airbags, without a back seat, had the ability to turn off passenger airbags. My F250 owners manual instructs in the process, specifically for child car seats and my 2004 Jeep Wrangler owners manual does too. If it was built that way, i would say good to go.

Airbags? We don't need no stinking airbags.😝

This is my 13 month old daughter in a 20 yr old CJ back in the summer of 1997.

Unfortunately she doesn't remember that and considers any drivable vehicle to be an appliance and if it's not drivable it needs replaced.😭

As much as I like the car hobby... I bet thats a peaceful life having that perspective
