Carpet replacement ideas

Lizard skin is another permanent solution. Two coats, heat protection followed by sound deadening.

I read the same reviews as above. Reviewers often said there was no change in heat levels or sound deadening. Of course, it’s just a thin layer of paint, so it doesn’t make much sense it could accomplish those claims. No direct experience here either.

Might be good if you are looking for a new finish underneath the carpet or rubber flooring of your choice.

Can you remove it (easily) without taking the seats or center console out?

Theres really no reason to take it out. It vacuums and cleans very easy and the drains are simple to put in for draining any water from snow or mud. Unless you're submerging your tub in a 4' muddle I dont see any reason to take it out. The back and wheel well covers can be taken out fairly easily if you dont have the rear seat in place though.

One thing I've not seen mentioned, unless I missed it, is geography can play a role in your choice. On the West coast, regular rain is less of a problem and carpet would be my choice. If you leave your jeep open and live in a rainy area, it may not be the best choice. Reason being, factory style carpet retains moisture and allows it to seep through to the floor. It also gets a musty smell pretty rapidly, if left wet. That smell then persists and is difficult to remove.

Since I live in an area that gets pop-up rain showers frequently, and keep my windows out 8 months of the year, I pulled my carpet and replaced it with Bedrug. Of course the tub could have been lined, but I don't like that look. Yes, Bedrug is not the best fitting product, but it solves a problem for those of us that live in wet areas and don't want to look at a lined only tub, or deal with nasty wet carpet. For the bad things mentioned about Bedrug, what it does do extremely well is protect water from seeping through, it doesn't retain water, doesn't mildew or get that funky smell, cleans up easily (mud, dirt, sand, etc.) and looks reasonably well, given the problem it solves.

West coast is not a place of regular rain? You must be in California? Washington gets rain 300 a year. well maybe not quite that much. But I dont understand why you would purposefully leave the interior exposed in an area that knowingly gets rain? Seems weird to me.

Fair point on West Coast and rain. As for the Jeep, because I can, and want too. What fun is having a vehicle where the windows can be removed, but they're not? Also, the visibility with the windows out is significantly better. Another reason I can is because, when not being driven, the Jeep is always in a garage, whether at home or work.

We don’t get much rain in the INW (E Washington averages 16”/yr), but during the snow months I like the WeatherTech Floor liners on top of the BedRug. They are easy to remove and clean and the BedRug just needs a little vacuuming. Most of the time I don’t have to do anything.

Whether it's water, mud, or just dust, I like to pull everything when cleaning. Even a little rock would scratch the floor up over time.

I used the Bedrug in my LJ. The biggest negatives I have found with it are it has zero heat or sound insulation. On my 06 driving without floor insulation cooked my right leg and I ended up having to add a layer of insulation.

I’ve been planning on installing BedRug as my TJ didn’t come with the rear carpet but if it really has no sound or heat insulating benefits then I don’t think that’s the way to go for me.

@JMT would you agree that it doesn’t insulate at all?

I don’t think you could say it doesn’t insulate at all. Anytime you create a space of air and a barrier there is some sound and heat insulation. I wouldn’t say it’s substantial at all though. Sound deadening and heat insulation is a whole world in itself. See “the deadening” on FB. The OEM carpet provides ZERO more sound and heat insulation than BedRug, so there’s that. If you want something that does that you’ll need to do something more than a carpet.

I just got rid of the carpeting all together and just bedlined the floor of my Jeep. During heavy rain, my floor and carpet would get soaked. I tend to leave my windows about an inch open, since I have a good alarm system and in case I lock my keys in it. So, if it rains, my carpet always got soaked, but no longer. I no longer have a problem with worn out, soggy, dirty or smelly carpet either. It also stops the floor pan from rusting due to standing water. I chose a white bedliner so that it matches the exterior paint color. If it gets wet, it is easy to dry and clean. The light white color makes it easy to see any dirt, and the bedliner seems to provide good sound deafening. I put thick tan plastic floor mats to match my interior and the two tone (white and tan color) looks really nice according to most people. All my carpet issues are gone forever, plus it's a truck basically and not a Mercedes Benz. It's supposed to look a little rugged.

Just to avoid creating a new thread and it might help people.

If ordering Bedrug. Do i choose with/without the console cutout? My Jeep came from the factory without a console but i have since added one. I assume some mounting holes might be different so my thinking is i choose the one without the cutout and then fit my console over the top, but is there anything else to consider?

I'd probably choose without as long as you're comfortable cutting what you need to cut. That way if anything is different with the console you're covered.

I second this. I debated what to do with my aging carpet for the last 7 years. Armorlite is not cheap for sure, but I couldn't be more pleased with a easy to clean surface that has good grip, cuts down on noise and heat surprisingly well, and does not soak up water like carpet. Long term durability is unknown but so far I'm happy with the added cost.

I did. I saw that at least one other person on here did as well, can't remember who though

I'm liking this a lot. Not a cheap solution, but looks like it fits great. What's the stick across the rear bed for? Was the liner not sitting properly? And on the passenger side, where the liner meets the tailgate jamb.. Looks like the liner is pulled away and not tucked in behind anything.. that would piss me off.

How does Armorlite accommodate the rear seat mounts? I have a Tuffy rear security enclosure that uses the rear seat mounts to secure it...

If you chose to, could you still use a WeatherTech style mat in the front, which relies on the little hook built into the factory carpet to keep it positioned? I don't see any hooks on the Armorlite liner..

EDIT - Reviewed the installation instructions and see how to accommodate the rear seats...

Same here. I did herculiner roll on to mine a few years ago. Where I live there's too much mud on the trails to have carpet lol. Aside from a small spot I didn't prep well it has held up good. Only thing I would change is perhaps try some sort of dynamat type product to go on before the bed liner

Is there a carpet kit that adds the hook to hold the weathertech mats in place?

The carpet in the 1998 TJ Sport did not come with the hook thingy. I was hoping for a solution for that. Looks like I will have to go with the Armorlite for sound and heat and total protection.

Edit: I went to the Armorlite site. It doesn't cover the "trunk" area; only the front and rear floor. Kinda disappointed if I am being honest. Everything can be upgrade on the TJ except the entire floor. Weird.

Edit: Also, They make it hard to contact customer support. Ni form to fill out and the contact goes to the facts page.

Unfortunate about not being able to contact them. Hard to drop that kind of cash on a purchase if you're hitting a road block before you even get started.

As far as the hook, I fabb'd one for one of my old JKs using a thru-bolt. Looked for some pictures but came up empty. AFAIR, it was a thru-bolt with rubber fender washers to seal it and lock nuts top and bottom. Not sure I would want to drill through the Armorlite though.

I'd be interested to know if you ultimately get in touch with customer support.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you but they make a complete kit for front and back. Or, you can piece it together if you prefer.

The only issue I see with the Armorlite is it does not have the truck. It covers the front and the "rear" where no one sits. Not a complete kit if it does cover the entire floor.

Well, I looked at it last night and the truck pieces were not there. When I clicked your link the pieces are there. So weird. I will continue to try and get a hold of customer service.

Thanks for finding the correct link. Unsure where I went wrong.

Edit: I went back and looked. They have two different kits. One that is the tub only and one that is the tub and rear.
