Building Homer (2005 TJ Build Thread)

Glad you & the family are finally feeling better since I know how that is. I've been sick since the New Year and have finally broke down and made a doctors appointment. I'll see what they say tomorrow about me...

My padding was in rough shape and I took it off years ago and threw it all away. And with the added bars in my cage I don't think I could use the stock padding anymore. I have thought about adding some foam to key areas so I don't bang my head on it but haven't ever gotten that far.
It looks great.

Hope you feel better soon! We went for a loop for weeks and weeks...

The padding is pretty good; fabric isn't perfect but it's in great shape for 20 years old. Curious how it'll look when it goes back together.

Been tinkering here and there on the Jeep. Made a list of 'must do' to get it driving again. First up - going to need headlights. So I've been working on that upgrade since I had already removed the OEM wiring back to the Distribution Block, as a trigger for the new relays.

Years ago, I picked up Cibie glass headlights and Osram Night Breaker bulbs. I'm not a fan of the look of LEDs on the market right now - I like the OEM look with glass.

As I think I mentioned before, I'm going with an OEM Distribution Block to add all my new circuits.

Relay to power the Distribution Block (from the battery - but I need to find a key-triggered 12V under the dash).

Second Distribution Block:

Note: the 16g wire is to trigger the relay to the Distro Block - will be tied off once I pick a circuit to tap...

I need to trim the cover:

New relays for the headlights. These give straight 12V from the battery - triggered off the multiswitch from the column (OEM Wiring).

Passenger Headlight:

Driver side:

I had painted 2 orange covers black. That's why the passengers side is black. This orange one is because I had the high-beam and low-beam in the socket wrong on my first install... So I accidentally broke the black one... I'll hit this with a paint pen at some point because the orange bothers me.

Wiring from the battery:

Low Beam:

High Beam:

Headlights will need to be re-aimed before the Jeep gets on the road again. Problem for a future day...

Very happy how this project came out. On to the next - BMB Taillights are wired, need to test them. Then painting frame & installing bumpers.

Looks good, nice job.

Thank you! Want to keep everything looking tight as it goes back together. Took me longer than it likely should have but it's part enjoyment (relaxation by working in the garage) and part 'get it driving'...

Last night's celebration dinner was a tasty ribeye at home. So much harder to take the 2.5 year old twins out for a steak dinner these days - they're good for a 'quick' meal at a restaurant as they give us about 45-min of cooperation before they're ready to go.

We love to take them out to get used to the restaurant experience, because my wife and I are big weekend restauranters - so we want them to grow up and learn to be good in that experience.

But - Steak dinners places around us aren't build for toddlers; so this was an at-home meal. Steak got a compound butter topper with garlic.

Love that it looked like the Continental USA...

(Yes - we ate in front of the TV, after the boys went to bed, and I was up on WTJF...)

Didn't get to wrench but did print off some better labels. We'll see how well these label marker labels last under the hood...

Looking at (not my next priority as listed above) my intake.

One issue was that I ripped out the breather port, that I had JB welded into the stock intake, when I had to remove the intake for the first time.

PXL_20240818_032018297.jpg

So I needed a better solution...

I plan to re-JB weld the part (clean out the old epoxy).

I'm thinking of a part like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CFY87MSF?tag=wranglerorg-20

I'm looking forward to seeing how long this part is as I plan to put it where the green lines are below...

I'll try to re-route the existing tubing to make a 90* bend (red lines) - or I'll buy a new hose to make the turn.

PXL_20231113_025548501.jpg

My thought is that with the 'quick connect' I'd be pushing into the JB weld (rather than pulling away) so it should keep everyone safer.

Also picking up a set of these for the hoses:

71DQnu8NovL.__AC_SX300_SY300_QL70_FMwebp_.webp

To keep everyone tight.

So not wrenching, but went to the other 'w' —- 'wallet' ;)

Why not do like I did and use a bulkhead barbed fitting and cut off the barb that goes inside the tube? This give you threads to tighten it down good & loctire it.

That is my back plan. Same concern I expressed on your install about the nut in the intake....

They will be my next step off this solution doesn't work.

If you're really that worried about it you could put a screen near the throttle body... I think the nut loctited and if you can reach stake it is more than adequate.
Hopefully the other plan will work..

I'm going to see how long it is when it arrives as I worry it'll be too long. It's a tight spot to fit.

If too long, I'll go the metal route.

Since my passenger taillight had been ripped out by a 'soft touch' car wash - I couldn't use the OEM threaded holes.

I reached out to @mrblaine for feedback on some nutserts I had found online and he had concerns that the ones I found were low-profile nutserts which he had poor performances with in the past. He did some research on options and found some 6mm hardware (nutserts & bolts). In typical Blaine fashion, he sent them over to me no cost.

Waiting for a Blaine and/or BMB package is like waiting for Christmas and then you open the mailbox..... and you know that package you anticipated has arrived!

I had previously dented in the outwardly-pulled passenger side threaded holes & surrounding area. The OEM taillights left an obvious gap to the body and were loose in the threaded holes.

Driver side was nice and flat. (Dirty but the taillights will come back off in the next couple weeks when I finish detailing the paint.)

Drilled out with a 25/64th bit to install the 6mm nutserts.

I had used this tool to dent in the passenger side and then used it square on the driver nutserts to push them flush to the tub:

Installed the taillights and they look great! Blaine makes a great product!!

It was raining so I couldn't step back to get a better shot of the overall look.

Wife hopped in the driver seat to test out brakes, reverse, parking, etc. features to ensure my wiring of the taillights was good. Worked great - and nice & bright. (y)

These taillights are gorgeous! I love the OEM look - These taillights give the OEM look with LED functionality.

With the new turn signal relay I had already installed for the GR front turn signals, these rear turn signals flash at the perfect rate.

It is hard to charge someone for parts when they are aiding myself and others in the future that may come up against the same problem. You helped me and them and I really appreciate it. Now I have the answer and that's worth more than a few bucks for nutserts.

Does this mean a kit for this might end up on your store?
