I park my TJ beside my neighbours '70 Bronco and they look about the same size. Unfortunately I think the new Bronco is bigger than the JK which I found way too big for me. But I still think Ford nailed it.
It will have more affect on the Four Runner and similar vehicles than the Wrangler.
I'm not taking anything away from the Bronco, but it will just isn't going to tear up the Wrangler market ...it's beyond entrenched, it literally is in a category it created.
I'm not saying this just because I'm a Jeep fan, I don't own a JK/JL and am not sure I ever will. I'm saying it because it's easy to see the market, and I'm very familiar with why Jeep sits where it does.
Right now, Jeep is about 100 cubic inches or more away from having the hottest vehicle on the planet (I realize the 392 is even bigger).
But any power train improvement in a vehicle that already owns the recreational off road market is a lot easier job than taking the marketshare is going to be for Ford.
I wish Ford well, and I wish Jeep would hurry up and put bigger engines in ....for the simple fact they need them, and have for ages.
Well said. How on earth did FCA ever come up with a 3.6 for the 4 door ?I'm still pissed there isn't anything larger than a 5.7 in the Ram 1500. Seems like that would be the right engine for the Jeep. Maybe they 392 is just for wow factor. Its gonna be an axle breaker, and I want one.
Good post.I think the new Broncos, at least the 2-door and 4-door are spectacularly good looking (especially the 2-door; with the doors off, the 4 door looks a hell of a lot like a JKU/JLU). And, oh boy, did they ever borrow from the Jeepers Christmas list! But that's smart.
For those of us whose TJ are for mainly off-road use, it remains to be seen what it will actually be able to do in that respect. My guess is that it will be competent but not stellar, until some experience shows its weak points and the aftermarket starts to compensate for them. Then, who knows, it might well become a two-manufacturer war against the trails (with the usual heavily-modified whatever always around).
For the mall-crawler crowd, it's all about looks and status. How much you spent and how much of the "look at me, I'm just like every other freekin' MC abomination out here!" you have going for you is what matters so, something new with a whole new set of bolt-on crap could be very exciting to that crowd!![]()
I know "the guy"!Good post.
Speaking of really nice Broncos, @SamwiseGamJeep has a full size beauty ....and boy this guy takes care of his toys.
We are old friends, we were roommates back in our wild days, and man was it insane. We were so wild, you would hear " you drive, you are way too drunk to roll the joints."
He's a great, great guy.
Woo hoo! Man that was a break.I know "the guy"!
Dave and I were cruising back from our Saturday Night foray into glorious downtown College Station (Texas A&M) in his '76 Dodge Van with a bored 318 and the pedal crying Uncle. We'd just finished downing 3 "Deaths" each (Gawdaful blue drinks with a lot of alcohol in a full-size hurricane glass) from Chelsea Street Pub and were feeling no...anything.
We go flyin' by this State Trooper sitting on the side of the road, I look over at Dave and ask "how fast are we going?" (in the same way Cheech Marin asked "how am I driving?" in Up in Smoke). Dave, looked down at the dash and said "uhh...faster than 120". We both laughed 'cause we new the jig was up and we were destined for a night in the poky but, when I looked in the side view mirror, I saw the trooper calmly pull out, make a left turn back toward town, and drive away.
We were just crying the rest of the way back to "the barracks". No clue if he was doing reports and didn't see us or just too tired to give a shit!
Good times! How the F we ever survived is a total mystery.
Well said. How on earth did FCA ever come up with a 3.6 for the 4 door ?
Then kept it in the Gladiator ...and messed with the exhaust and engine management to get the claimed towing capacity.
They needed to wake up a long time ago, and all the yap about it wasn't safe, crumple zones, etc. was a lie. .. coming from the same people that produce the Hellcat. Geeze.
Good comparison..the 3.6 with 70+ more horses in a 5000 lb 4 door chassis did nothing for the horsepower to weight ratio. My wife drives a 2014 GC with a 3.6. If she gets another one it will be a 5.7. Way more fun. The 3.6 isn't bad, its just adequate. Kinda like the 4.0.
You don't get it. You're too smart to own a BroncoThat bottle opener is embarrassing, if you can’t find three or four places to open a bottle that’s not a twist off, then you do need an engineer to design one for you, also who wants to drive around with a full cargo bed of doors and no top? Where do you put your 6 pack of craft beer? Where do you store the top?
I guess that's a good thing.
Makes you wonder if 19 years in the future they will be releasing a retro styled TJ-esque Wrangler.
. . . Bronco has as much history as Jeep . . . .
Why do they have cinder blocks under the front springs? Goatman doing their tuning for them?Seriously?
Which war did the Bronco win?
