I guess so. It's supposed to come from under the drum apparently, and I fucked it up. It cut the rope immediately first pull ☹️

You need to correct that. The winch is not designed to pull when the drum is turning that direction. And doing so guarantees breaking the rope. Especially if the fairlead mount opening is too small.

So I learned.

It isn't like its pulling when I press the "out" button... It just is coming out of the wrong side of the drum and coming at too steep an angle. I am pretty sure there is room in the opening that I don't need to chamfer the plate, but I still might when I have it apart.

And yeah that rope was tearing long before much load was on the winch. I'm glad @Apparition saw it cutting before we really put load on it.

The BMB fairlead should have a ring around the slot on the backside. That is intended to show how large the mount opening should be in order to prevent rope damage.

If the rope doesn't pull in from the bottom of the drum when you press the IN button, then something isn't wired correctly.

The way you have it spooled it should have spooled in when you were pressing out. If not something is wrong

When we felt around today, assuming it's spooled correctly lol, there is a very small sideload radius where the plate may cut in but otherwise lots of room. It was the awful angle that let it get cut without a side load

The way you have it spooled it should have spooled in when you were pressing out. If not something is wrong

Well the remote is kinda ambiguously labelled but when I was originally spooling it on my driveway I am fairly certain I was pressing "in" and it was going "in" 🤷

But it hardly matters since I need to fix it when I get home no matter what. If I respool it and try again and it is backwards I guess I'll inspect the wiring. Those thick gauge wires held shape pretty well so I would be surprised if I wired it wrong but anything is possible.

The real moral of the story is, this is why you don't do hard trails alone 🙂

The fairlead has a line engraved around the back of it that you are supposed to be able to see through the opening in the fairlead mount to prevent the rope from getting cut. If you can't see the line, make it so you can. The rope can easily be spliced back together. I have another one if you don't want to spend a few minutes learning a skill you'll need to move the thimble over anyway.

Winch needs to turn to spool in the line under the drum. If the remote is wrong, remove the switch and flip it over. The brake works far better when the drum turns the correct way. That and I'll bet a dollar there is a picture of how the line goes in on one those decals I can see on the winch.

Yeah I missed the memo about the fairlead markings, although the group in Moab seemed to know about that, so I probably missed some instructions somewhere. I'll work on that when I get it apart too.

Thanks for the offer, I do think I might as well learn to splice the line now. If this happened when I was alone that would have been my only option. I think @Apparition mentioned there was a tool for it, some kind of big needle? What's the name of that again?

Sucks to suck, but I guess you live and learn. Could've been a bad situation if I needed my winch in a hard spot alone, but... should try to not end up in a situation like that to begin with anyways.

A fid or a Sharpie or a pen or a taped up end of the rope. Anything to help you move the rope end though the hollow core.

Ah thanks. Can probably pick one up today looks like they're just a couple bucks at the Ace hardware
 
I'm just gonna leave this here so I don't forget all the stuff I need to do after the Moab trip, mostly for myself lol.

  • Rotate tires
  • Fix threads on correctlync and re-align
  • Wire in and mount new air compressor
  • Cut/chamfer winch plate for thimble fairlead
  • splice winch rope back together and respool correctly
  • Store recovery gear in half door?

The tool is called a fid but you don't need a fid, you need a tool you can use as a fid which as pointed out can be most anything you can tape to the tapered tail and feed through the rope core to help you feed the line along.

I don't care what gear you use, but be very wary of them that want to keep you ignorant and slow down the skills you should acquire to be a bit more self sufficient. I did you no favors by splicing on the thimble for you. I should have made you spend the 5 minutes to learn that skill. I have some cheap, just get you by fids if you like a set. Send me an address.

Yeah, I appreciate that you did that especially since I was pretty busy in prep for leaving for Moab, but turns out my winch was no use either way lol.

I have a lot to learn but I am not the most useless person when stuff breaks down on the trail 😂

I haven't touched my jeep other than rotating the tires since I got back from Moab. Holy cow engine swaps are very time consuming and a huge cognitive load. I'll be back to working on it and thinking about jeeps soon but for now my head is all mr2 parts and Mr. Toyoda
