ATV toolbox for a TJ

I have the tuffy wheel well boxes like these in my Jeep. They work well to hold small items I keep in it all the time and are secure. But they do not hold much.
That's the point just essentials for daily driving and whatnot.

The rear ID is 36". This box is 32.25". It's really tempting to push the box over to one side so I can stick longer things next to it when that need arises. A single 3.5 x 36" space seems better than two 1.75 x 36" gaps. There will be about 22" left of the cargo deck once this is installed.

I think I'll be re-using the four footman loops inside the tool box to anchor it. That is 8 anchor points spread out pretty well.

If you are permanently or semi-permanently mounting that box I would ditch the rear seat belts.

I'm thinking the same. I snapped a bolt on one of the seat brackets, so there definitely won't be any rear passengers until I can fix that. It's been years since anyone sat back there anyway.

I used the seat belt mounting points to mount a box similar to what you are using. I slid it all the way to the drivers side and the mounting bolts are inside the box. On the passenger side I needed an L bracket to reach the mounting points. The bolts inside the box on the drivers side should be a theft deterent with the box locked.

I'm leaning towards a narrower box, possibly offset. Looking at my usual stuff, I don't think I need this much capacity and a narrower box will allow me to carry two chairs.

I thought you were getting a full width box !? Did they have wrong size description on Amazon?

It is inaccurate. But the gap from being too small got me rethinking this.

Mounting it offset is not a bad idea. I considered that, and also mounting it north-south (ie across the length of the tub) on the passenger side. I did not want to drill unnecessary holes in the floor till I was sure, so for now just running it the way I have it in the photos. I have two milk crates in the front of the box that fit just about right that I use on the rare times I take the TJ out for grocery or shopping trips.

Why did you opt for a smaller box? Also why not just make your own considering the cost could be a lot lower and exactly your specs.

Making my own is difficult right now. This one was well under the list price due to scratches I don't care about and dents I can't find.

I picked smaller because after seeing the other box, I realized I wanted to keep some of the full depth of the cargo deck to carry larger things.

All good reasons to not. I’m curious to see your total gear setup in the rear for a wheeling trip.

The box is bolted to the bed. Eight nutserts.

I picked the driver's side because the tailgate latch pin is on that side. This keeps the open side that much more clear for larger things. Seatbelts are gone. I would like to get rid of the wheel well ammo cans, as well. I think there is room to absorb those into the new big box.

Next steps are to add a gas lift strut, a locking paddle handle and then replace the key with a Tuffy combination knob like my center console has. I might also add a light to the underside of the lid.

I had a box similar to yours but almost as wide at the rear seat area. It holds a lot but it seemed like whatever I wanted was on the bottom and I often had a cooler or something else behind it and was a challenge to reach in if I had my soft top windows in. With windows out just go in from the side.
