I make a post in the oxy/acetylene torch thread about a birthday and confetti. Then I received this today

Happens all the time to my wife and I.

We'll be having a conversation about something very specific, then we'll see adds online for it all over. I'm not sure how it's happening though, because we don't have Alexa. I think it may be Siri on our iPhones.

I was cruising down the freeway one day and some idiot had just flew past me for the 6th time and I casually commented "oh my god" and my phone lit up and said "I'm not sure how to help with oh my god"
I laughed, then I got worried

Same here, but we do have an Alexa. Makes me want to get rid of it.

I got rid of mine. They're fun and can be helpful, but I'd rather play my music through a legit stereo anyways and I can always easily set a timer / ask info on my phone.

Not that my phone is listening any less, but in reality anything voice activated is always "listening" - by nature they have to be so they can hear the key word to "wake up". I believe even Samsung TVs have been known to record info as well.

The government's collecting so much data on us, it's insane.

My Alexa feeds the stereo in my garage. Fully voice activated and works well.

You are being watched, but I believe this case is just coincidence.

Realistically, most of the big tech companies don’t need to listen or read everything necessarily. They have such accurate models based on so much else around us that they can often just guess and be right... it’s insane (and somewhat impressive).

What people don't realize is Alexa, or something like it, is always watching. Everything you search for online, on your phone, etc... That's how they hit you with ads here for whatever you last looked at on Amazon.

Even more insidious, your phone is listening. Have it in your pocket and talk to someone about Taco Bell, which you haven't eaten at in years, and the next time you bring up the app store it will suggest the Taco Bell app. Or see ads for it online, or whatever. I've noticed that more than a few times.

I was having a conversation in my office with a guy that used to live in the same area of the FL Panhandle as me - we were talking about this obscure BBQ sauce & seasoning company from S. Alabama that is only available in that local area. Little family-run business that never expanded but that has a cult-like following within 100 miles. He went back to his office & ten minutes later came back in to show me his Facebook page on his phone which had been sitting on the corner of my desk while we chatted - it was an ad from a food delivery company that specialized in local specialty spices & seasonings with that same company we were just talking about.

Maybe a coincidence, he said he hadn't thought of it for a long time before we started reminiscing but who knows. Still creepy.

I didn’t know they read our messages as well. I had a message from a friend to bring my cat carrier to her that night. Later I got a reminder to bring said cat carrier to my friend! It was from Siri. Weird. I never set any reminders. Siri is now turned off everywhere!

I'm getting ready to retire and move onto Career 2. I joined linkedin a few months back to look at jobs. I didn't upload a resume or list any information other than name, job, and location. The next day I got a notice asking me if I was friends with my cousin and the brother of a childhood friend (both live 3,000 miles from me, I have not spoken to either of them in 30 years, and I never have/don't do any social media before registering on linkedin). Strange times indeed.
