Approximately how much fuel left when low gas light comes on?

For me it comes on when there's still around 4 gallons left if not more. I pay no attention to the low fuel light, I use my trip odometer to know when it's time to fill up. By the time I pull into a gas station the pointer is at the bottom of the scale, the gauge is notoriously pessimistic.

Same here about 4 gallons. Most I have ever put in is 16.5 Gallons at the pump but, normally if I stop right away it's around 15 Gallons for fill-up. I also have the pointer bottom out fairly quickly if I continue on.

6 for me.

Need to figure out how to adjust the resistance of the potentiometer in the sender.

Why? This is like the "I hate metric fasteners" BS. They make a tool that fits, that means it is a known quantity. As long as you know what the gauge indicates, why does it matter?

And just so everyone knows, it is done that way exactly by design. If the opposite were true and it ran out exactly when the needle hit empty, everyone would be bitching about them not building in any reserve.

Forgot to mention that it isn't resistance based. It is voltage based. We can see the voltage that indicates fuel level when we watch it on the DRB. I tried to fix one with a gauge fixer that was resistance based and it didn't work.

I once drove 42 miles after the light came on. It was during a long trip where one planned fuel stop ended up not having a working pump so I just kept going to the next town. I put just over 18 gallons in when I did fill up.
