There's a technique to it that I'm only vaguely aware of.
He’d done it 100’s of times prior. Walked in calm as can be and said he just broke his arm to go get mom.
This issue is kickback when the engine tries to run backwards. I notice my jeep does it sometimes, usually after a crank and fire that doesn't quite get it started. Sometimes the following attempt you can hear the starter crank for a bit and then completely stop for a second before cranking again.
Useless trivia. The founder of Delco developed the electric starter when a friend died hand cranking his car. Car backfired, and the hand crank cracked the guy in the face, leading to his death.
May be useless but that’s fascinating
