Another solution to a problem that never existed

I'm thinking I might start a thread in the off-topic forum entitled "Everything Wrong With Modern Vehicles." It could be interesting, might serve as cautionary for folks considering such a purchase, and just give us all one place to voice our gripes and frustrations.

Just got back from the store in the wife’s new vehicle. I was slowly backing into a parking space and the vehicle suddenly stopped as if I had run into something. It was the stupid vehicle slamming on the brakes for some reason. I must have still been a 1/2 car length away from the vehicle behind me so I had no idea why the dumass vehicle thought I was too close.

I used to be a "lot rat" moving vehicles around our parking lot for a vehicle upfitting company. A Silverado ev did this to me and I shit my pants thinking I had hit something. Eff that

I'm telling you guys, my sense of humor is absurdity and in these end times we find ourselves living in, absurdity is everywhere! On one hand it's painful to watch, on the other hand, I love it

As they say...

This comment caught my eye, so I'll resurrect this thread...

My assigned work vehicle is a '23 F150, and one day at work recently I hooked it up to a small utility trailer just to shuffle the trailer to a different parking spot. Was moving less than a 100 yds, without leaving the property, so didn't bother hooking up the lights.

The truck would not let me back the trailer into the spot. Apparently since the trailer lights weren't connected, the truck just sensed an object behind it that I was about to run into, and kept applying the brakes when I tried to back up. I could move forward no problem, but no backing up.

I'll confess that I was a little slow on the uptake, and tried to back up several times, getting madder by the second, until I sheepishly realized what was happening and hooked up the lights.

I’ll jump in since you resurrected this and share my BMW…(bitchin, moaning, whining) about vehicles and technology. Due to mirrors where ‘things may be closer then they appear’ and/or manually adjusted side mirrors you can’t reach from the seat, I occasionally open the door to look back or I don’t even close the door completely to move forward on the driveway. Well, these column shifters that just rock forward or backward to pick a gear instead of actually moving caused some accidents so Jeep did a software update for 2015 GC and it won’t move with door open. If I’m backing up and open the door it slams into park. Took me twice to learn that lesson. Now some of the new ones won’t go into drive or reverse if the seat belt isn’t latched.

And I still hate the pressure sensor in the passenger seat, I often throw my work bag there and it causes the alarm to go off.

I drive the TJ as often as possible. I don’t need products that think they are smarter than me, which I guess is most of them now a days.

I won't say that I "routinely" open the door to back up - but I do it fairly often, always have. I'd "do something" about it if I had a car that did that crap. Americans and their Nanny State interlocks.

I have never opened my door to back up, whats the point of that? There are windows and mirrors for that sort of work

I did it just today in a parking lot to see how close I was to the line beside the vehicle. Can’t see that in a mirror or backup camera. And even if you could, I have neither in the TJ.

I was trying to do an oil change on my wife's QX60 and the "collision avoidance" kept locking up the brakes before I could get it up on the ramps. Going slow, slamming on the gas was no bueno. Eventually I just pumped the oil from the dipstick tube and turned hard right to access the filter from the wheel well.

Yes, mirrors and spot mirrors are great - but sometimes its just easier/faster to just open the damn door and look back. Learned it from my father. My mother tried it once, and almost fell out!
