A sign of the times

My main dislike of smartphones actually doesn't arise from all the bullshit that they engender - that's just the frosting on the cake. Its primarily because I see them as a completely pointless waste of my time and money. And that would be fine, except everyone EXPECTS me to participate in this lunacy, which I refuse to do. The cost to society for catering to these damn things is massive, yet I don't GAS except when it becomes an expectation that I'm supposed to participate. Someone wants to put up with the hideous cost and royal pain in the ass these things are, that's on them. Your life is all about the PHOOOOOONNE - that's on you - just don't expect me to share your delusion, and FFS don't inconvenience me with your crippled "device". I didn't need one in 1978, I sure as hell don't need one now.

I'm old enough to remember similar things being said about televisions.

And they would be right - and I wouldn't have a TV either if it were up to me. Yet a TV is a good example of a dedicated device doing 1 thing and doing it well, not a pointless jack of all trades that does nothing particularly well.

And we have eons of history behind us where each and every one of those points is a moving target when trying to identify where the moral and immoral is.

Yep - because "morals" are an attempt to impose absolutism on a relative universe.

Be it for work, play, or some other aspect of daily life, I use my phone nearly every day to research, learn, organize, and figure things out. The smartphone has been an incredibly valuable tool for about the last 15 years.

The grandstanding about sheltering them is where the absurdity is.

Who said anything about sheltering them?

My wife and I regularly sit them down and explain to them all of this. We make a point to tell them about all the evil and immorality in the world so that they know it when they see it. We'll regularly watch movies with mildly inappropriate scenes in them and then ask them if they can point out the sin.

I don't believe in sheltering my children as that wouldn't prepare them for the fallen world we live in.

When they become adults they get to make their own decisions. At that point I can only hope and pray that the way they were raised plays a part in the decisions they make as adults.

As I said, if your life is all about the PHOOOOOONNE, that's fine as long as you don't inconvenience me with it or expect me to be involved with them. I can't imagine using such a tiny and crippled device for much of anything, as I've said frequently. But I sure wish I had a nickel for every time someone's damn smartphone has impacted me or my life...

Pointing out the sin with mom and dad is a wonderfully wholesome family activity! Everything is going to fine.

I don't have any expectations that you should utilize your telephone for research and education.

That's the way it should be, as my computer is FAR better suited to such tasks. But the number of vehement smartphone apologists never ceases to amaze me - one person described that phenomenon as a "technological fundamentalism".

I'm glad we have your blessing. I'm not sure what I'd do without it.

I am going to trust that you really are not raising self-righteous assholes, despite your odd description of family fun time.

No, it might sound that way over the internet but I can say with certainty that I am not raising self-righteous assholes.

Self righteousness is engendered by True Believers (tm). There is nothing on the planet worse than a True Believer (tm) of ANY kind.
