A TJ only shop told me today, aside from the inner trim going on a little different, the earlier generation of windshield frames tend to rust less…they have drain holes. He prefers those.

If this holds true, might be good to know.

Make sure the upper seal is good. Older they get the worse they seem to be. Be prepared to drill some new holes if you install the trim from the 03-06 years on a 97-02 windshield frame.

I've noticed this in various posts about replacing windshield frames -The newer style frames have much worse rust. When I was rebuilding my rusty 2002 Jeep, I was surprised to see the windshield frame was in really good shape with very little rust.

I have a 2005 LJ with an older windshield frame. I posted thinking the 97-02 frame slots might be different than 03-06 then deleted it when I realized I just didn't have it seated completely. It's much closer now but I still haven't got it. I'm thinking I may need a new seal. This one is pretty hard with no give to get the hard top to latch. Might need to order a new one.
