I installed an LED light bar and had the dash partially apart. Since then, the 4WD light has been on. Anyone know if there may just be something I need to find an plug back in or something ? Just figured I would ask here before tearing back into everything!

Thanks!

I've never actually had the dash apart. However, my guess would be that you may have left something unplugged.

Are there any indications that it may actually be in 4WD (aside from the light)?

I'm only asking incase the light happens to be on because it IS in 4WD.

No. It is driving fine, and when it is in 4wheel on a hard surface I would be able to tell I'm sure. I am going back through the dash now and will post any results I get.

So last night inpulled the dash apart and checked all my connections. I tried re adjusting the shift linkage. Mine is an automatic so I really only have the transfer case linkage. I also checked all the fuses. The 4WD light is just stuck on... I am guessing the only thing I have not messed with yet is the transfer case sensor itself. From what I have found, (please correct me if wrong) is I should be able to unplug the sensor and the light will go off to show the wiring is good. Then pull the sensor with it plugged in and manually actuate the switch to verify the switch functions? I will have some time this afternoon to check it out, and unless someone says differently, that's the direction I am heading! Thanks!

That sounds about right to me.

This seems coincidental (that it happened right after you were messing with the gauge cluster), but I think it may just be one of those things where it happened at the wrong time. I'd check that transfer case sensor like you mentioned.

You are correct, unplugging the sensor at the transfer case will confirm the integrity of the wiring if the light goes out.

Wow! It is fixed.... I found an old forum post from another site in 1997 that had the info.... while installing the light bar and going through everything I was replacing fuses and testing things. I put a 10a fuse in an empty slot for "clutch override" I don't have a manual trans, so what difference does it make?

HUGE... the wiring is there so if we were to convert to a manual transmission it would be plug and play. (Jeep is smart there!) by putting the fuse in there, the computer could not se a manual trans sensor and turned the light on as a fault. I went out and pulled the fuse as directed from the old post, and the light is working and trans and transfer case are functioning as expected.

Wild! I guess I am just glad it is working properly!

I was just about to suggest that but since yours is an Automatic I wouldn't have thought that would have done anything.

Do you remember which fuse number it is?

My transfer case lever moves L and R a little bit - probably not good and a separate issue. I wiggled it and the 4wd light went off in 2wd. When I was in 4wd-lo the light was on. Otherwise the light was reversed (ON in 2wd and OFF in 4wd-hi).

I know this is an old thread but I have the same trouble on a manual shift, 4wd light always on not in 4wd. I replaced the switch in the transfer case years ago and it didn't fix it so I have just lived with it but I think I want to chase it again. Did I hear right unplugging at the switch the light should go off??

Yes, the 4WD light should turn off with the switch unplugged.

we have the same problem today. I just had a new clutch put in, and now my 4 wheel drive light is turned on all the time too, and I'm not in 4x4. The shop made sure that my 4 wheel drive is working, but they can't turn the light off either, not sure what to do? I have a manual too - 2002

Welcome.

Unplug the harness at the switch and if the light goes out then it's the switch that is located above and to the left of the front driveshaft mounted vertical in the transfer case.... all looking front to rear.
