4.0 Rebuild or Scrapyard?

XJ compatibility is something I am not an expert at.

Does it have a distributor?

Have we determined your head is salvageable?

I'm in the Bay area this week if you need or want help.

How's your project going?

Ended up getting the 4.0 and towing the TJ back to a friends garage here in Santa Cruz, and working on it in my spare time! Currently I have the old motor out and the new one ready to go in, just waiting for a clutch alignment tool and manifold gasket to come in the mail.

Drained the oil on the old motor and found about 6 quarts of coolant to come out before any trace of oil came out, later which the oil seemed to have bits of metal inside of it so I figured that the head (and block) must be toast by that much alone.

On the new motor I did the valve cover, oil pan and rear main seal gaskets. I inspected the rod bearings and pistons and everything checks out it’s just a bit dirty under the valve cover and the oil pump pickup had a bunch of rocks/chunky stuff in the screen mesh (is this concerning?). The motors mounts bolt up perfectly and I just have to time the distributor and put everything back on once I have it lined up with the tranny!

(edit: I’m hoping to finish it by tomorrow or Wednesday so I can get turkey with my family in Southern California )

I would not dump any time or money into a blown engine/blown trans, almost 30 year old free car that is approaching 300k miles. Especially as a daily driver.

Good luck!

Heck ya keep it going, I did all of this same crap at the start of my university career. Now it's the vehicle all my buddies love and we beat on!

Solid work and I wouldn't worry about the chunks in the oil pump screen...get them good and cleaned out and send it.

You might want to pop a crank bearing cap off... personally I'd do the rear cap and RMS while it's out. That would give you a chance to inspect the bearings...and make note of the numbers stamped on the flip side of the bearing for future reference.

Ya this all sounds like a good idea, I’ll see to it tmrw before I line it up.

On an unrelated note I was curious on how far the pilot bearing and sleeve should stick out. The new engine didn’t have either and in my old engine the assembly sits about a quarter of an inch inside. After hammering both the sleeve and bearing in for a good 15-20 minutes with a socket I’ve only got it to sit just about flush… is this ok for clearance and won’t mess anything up?

What happened with the install? You have a running Jeep yet?

The install ended up going well, after this thread I had some problems with a no start issue that I posted in a different thread that ended up being a wiring issue. The engine ended up being out of a 89 and not a 99 but I’ve had the jeep running for about 10k miles now since late December. No complaints outside of losing a little bit of power.
