Ended up getting the 4.0 and towing the TJ back to a friends garage here in Santa Cruz, and working on it in my spare time! Currently I have the old motor out and the new one ready to go in, just waiting for a clutch alignment tool and manifold gasket to come in the mail.
Drained the oil on the old motor and found about 6 quarts of coolant to come out before any trace of oil came out, later which the oil seemed to have bits of metal inside of it so I figured that the head (and block) must be toast by that much alone.
On the new motor I did the valve cover, oil pan and rear main seal gaskets. I inspected the rod bearings and pistons and everything checks out it’s just a bit dirty under the valve cover and the oil pump pickup had a bunch of rocks/chunky stuff in the screen mesh (is this concerning?). The motors mounts bolt up perfectly and I just have to time the distributor and put everything back on once I have it lined up with the tranny!
(edit: I’m hoping to finish it by tomorrow or Wednesday so I can get turkey with my family in Southern California )
