Can you grab a picture of where the dipstick enters the transmission case? I want to understand how this part is supposed to fit.
@sonnyram dont ghost me bro

That does help. I swear my dipstick isn’t tapered like yours is. And it appears that the seal goes in from the top, and the dipstick fits down into the opening? I swear I tried exactly that but my tube was not going in that hole.
(that’s what he said to her)
I have the one off eBay, and another (much cheaper) more or less identical one off Rock Auto. I guess we’ll just see.

That is the right seal,are you sure you have the right tube?
This isn’t my 97 that I’ve been talking about, it’s my daughters 97 that is having its pump seal replaced this weekend.
No taper, and no sign of the tell tale lip of that seal like you have. I’m going to find an o-ring inside there.

Must be two diameters in that bore in the case. The oring is a stop on the smaller diameter to limit the insertion depth.
The green paint was sprayed by me while it was still in the case, so I have an idea of the depth when I go to put it back together.
You sure it’s the stock tube,the brackets on the bell house should set the depth

It's 27 years old and I'm the 4th owner, so who can ever be sure of such a thing. But I have two 97's in my driveway with identical dipstick setups so that would be quite a coincidence. Parts diagrams are pretty much identical from 97-02 (appears to be an o-ring throughout the years), but the 97 actually has a different part number for the dipstick and the seal.

Searching for J094 0298 does turn up an o-ring looking thing...

But the plot thickens if you dig a little deeper. I found this odd note on teamgrandwagoneer.com (which sounds like a Jeep-related site) where apparently the o-ring style was used on Chevy TH350/400 transmissions and specifically the longer sleeve style, which they call a "hat seal" replaces part number J094 0298, but unless the dipstick also changed there is just no way. But also, Wagoneers, Full Size Cherokees, and the J truck used a Chevy transmission at one point??

You should be able to stab it in and rotate it to the bell housing bolt .if it won’t do that it either is not right or the bracket has been altered or bent.
thats my plan this time around. I was much more careful removing it, and i've got markings so I can see in what ways is it off, if it ends up being off. But based on prior experience there is no orientation that made it seal up without RTV. But i'm hoping this time is different. Meanwhile I'm feeling a little vindicated that the FSM backs up my findings about it being an o-ring seal.
You most likely need a fatter o ring,if you need dipstick measure,let me know-jeff
Last summer I found somebody selling the o-ring, but I still leaked. I tried other o-rings out of a kit but nothing I had fit right. Honestly, an aftermarket dipstick is probably what is needed here.
It need to be anchored to a bolt,if you need some measurements ,let me know,somebody on here will have to have a 97 auto that can take pics of it’s mounting? You could most likely use the 2002 tapered tube and stick
