Talking with a friend last night, he mentioned his 2006 Rubicon with the 6 speed is having transmission problems. The quote he received for a rebuild was over $2000. What options would he have for replacement? With all of the talk around here of automatic swaps, is there an auto that would swap in directly? Is there a better manual that could be swapped in? Is the 6 speed worth rebuilding?

This is for a 2006 Rubicon, 4.0, 35's, 6 speed. Not sure what gear ratio he has but he mentioned being limited to about 60 on the highway.

Thanks

@NashvilleTJ can hook you up with tips on getting rid of your engine, transmission, and suspension issues. My lifetime savings wouldn't buy me one of his tires/wheels. 🇺🇸
p.s. Ignore the yellow color. He told me that was the only good color Jeep ever produced. 🥳

You can get a rebuilt NSG370 from High Impact for around $2k. @g.hayduke has around 40K mi on his.

You can swap in an AX-15 5 spd, which you can buy new for around $2K. You will lose the low 1st gear the 6 spd has and it sounds like he's under geared as is.

To go auto you will need a new PCM for an AT that has the TCM in it.

In contrast to @g.hayduke's experience, @astjp2's experience is dramatically different. I've lost track of how many High Impact transmissions he's put in his TJ trying to get one that works. If you have eight or nine hours (that's hyperbole), you can read about his experience in his "This is why I has NSG transmissions" thread.

That year came with a 42RLE auto, but as mentioned you'd need a computer that could control the transmission. There are threads on that swap.

The 32Rh came in earlier jeeps and requires no electronics outside of the neutral safety (which you don't need) and the torque converter lockup (which you also don't need). On a 97-02, both would throw codes if not functioning, but if the computer was a manual then it would know to expect those things and I would expect it wouldn't light the CEL. I don't know specifically, but I would expect it to bolt directly up to your 4.0L. You may need to do a bit of research on the transfer case input shaft length if you went down that road.

Now that I think of it, I don't recall ever seeing a swap thread where a newer manual tried to swap in a 32RH but I can't see why it wouldn't be possible.

Thanks for the info. I will pass this along to him. Sounds like he is gonna be out a couple grand any way he goes.
