Hi - my 2006 TJ Rubicon is throwing the code P0431. I believe the exhaust system is original. Question - do I bite the bullet and replace the cat converte, muffler and tailpipe? Anyone done this? What did you learn from the experience? What do I need to know?

Before replacing a cat I'd verify 3 things; 1 - make sure there are no obvious leaks within the exhaust system, especially in front of the cat. 2 - make sure your ignition system (spark plugs and coil) are in good condition. 3 - verify your O2 sensors are good. Someone else might come along with something totally different to say, but that is how I go about catalytic codes.

Just for example, years ago I had a girl bring me a Mitsubishi that threw a catalytic code, so she took it to an exhaust shop and they told her the cat was bad, we'll fix it for $900. She let them do the work and the code came back a week later. The shop told her some BS, and that they needed to replace the cat again, she just had to pay labor cost or something to the tune of a few hundred $ more. I talked her into letting me look at it first and easily figured out her spark plugs needed to be changed. 4 new plugs later, and she was good to go.

Very helpful guidance! Thank you

I will double check! Thank you!!

I'm in your area and I will say you better get real comfortable with a high quality scan tool because all the shops I have tried suck. They are parts changers and when you are paying a shop to find an issue such as this, it will get expensive real fast.

Those cat codes have ancillary causes and as stated above will get recommended to change the cats which may not fix the problem and the technician parts changer is as a complete loss as to why.

If you find a great shop, please let me know.

Welcome to the forum.

The 05 and 06 have several differences from the other TJs:

The PCMs are going to fail. Fortunately there is a solution available.

The OPDAs are problematic. If yours has the OEM one in it, it probably needs to be pulled and checked. Many just go ahead and replace it with an aftermarket one for piece of mind.

If you have the 6 spd manual, they can have issues.

Having said all that, I have over 280K on my 06 and it still runs fine. Replaced the OPDA around 115K preemptively, the PCM went out at around 265K. Clutch at around 270K, but my 6 spd has been fine otherwise.

I would have preferred a manual trans but Ms Daisy came as an automatic. I appreciate the intel on this OPDA issue. Since she's opened up now, may as well check it all out. TY!

BlueC - surpr'isingly, she does not burn oil....the previous owner seems to have been very careful and consistent with Daisy's .maintenance. Someone else mentioned checking OPDA though, and that was new news (so as not to have an oil problem :))

If the OPDA seizes you will lose oil pressure and kill the engine. So, if you get a check gauges light and the oil pressure is 0, shut it down immediately.

Mine doesn't burn oil at 280K. Keep the oil changed and it will be fine.
