hi, i just picked up a 2005 TJ 4.0 automatic. with 167k miles. any advice on repairs under $1000 that I should consider? Basically looking to prevent any serious problems that may be on the horizon.

- very little rust, engine is good. drives smoothly. no diagnostic issues.

If the OPDA is still the factory LDI, plan on inspecting it for seizing, gear wear. Replace with Crown or Dorman updated designs.

If the PCM is still OEM, a PCM replacement from Wranglerfix will be in your future at some point.

If your driveshafts are OEM, they are sealed, no lubrication required, but at this point the only way to know is to inspect.

Please fill out your profile so we know what all your TJ has. Full stock, gears, lift, tires, etc. check some profiles to see what other folks have done.
When I got my 05 113K PO had changed all the lubricating fluids with good stuff. I flushed and replaced coolant, flushed the brake fluid, new plugs, new injectors with heat shield and pulled the tires to inspect the brakes. I also started a diary to keep track of what and when I did things and what brand I used. I’m old and have CRS so I have to write it down. Also check the date code on your tires.

20 years old is almost more relevant than 167k miles.

Consider all of the original rubber items shot...hard and brittle. Entirely possible many have been replaced.

Things like radiator hoses, PCV grommets on the valve cover, the rubber center of the crank pulley and brake hoses.

Check the date code on your tires too!

Congrats!! I just picked up a new-to-me 2001 TJ with 168k this past week and will be tackling many of the above maintenance items myself.

I will ask though, what’s with the PCM replacement? Is that a known failure point on these rigs as they age a bit? First I’ve heard of it. Anywhere particular to snag a new one?

Wranglerfix.com for a PCM. 2005-2006 are known failures...your 2001 has potentially bad heads.

Pictures!
