I recently replaced my PCV “valve” on my 2005. Some of the info on the PCV wasn’t clear so hopefully this might clear things up for someone. I’m sure some people already know this so this is for those who do not.

The 2005-2006 used a different PCV valve than the 1997-2004 (the rear most valve). Basically, the engine vacuum pulls air from the filtered air side, through the engine, and then into the intake to be burned. When you decide to replace the grommets usually the plastic fittings break and have to be replaced. But, you cannot buy the specific 2005-2006 valves any more. Luckily, you don’t need to.

Here is what the 2005-2006 valve looks like.

It appears to be large at the bottom. But, a regular elbow like the front will not work as it will pull in too much air.

If you look inside, you’ll see a tiny hole. That’s what’s restricting the vacuum and only pulling a little vs a lot.

If you try to order a PCV valve for a 2005-2006 you will only get the front elbow which will NOT work to replace the 2005-2006 unique version. It’ll work just fine on the front but will NOT work on the valve nearest the firewall.

But, if you order/purchase a PCV valve for a 1997-2004 you’ll get this one (this is a Dorman but there are other brands out there many of which are cheaper).

Note the small orifice hole in the bottom of it. Same size as the 2005-2006 just in a different location.

The new fitting has a larger outside diameter so you will need the larger grommet. Same grommet as the front now.

Install it and it’ll look like this

You won’t have that cool flange that the 2005-2006 engine had. So, you won’t be able to impress your friends who don’t own a 2005-2006 model. But the best part is, it’ll work just fine.

If you, by some miracle, happen to get the neat 2005-2006 PCV valve out without breaking it, you are lucky. You can order this grommet since it has a smaller interior diameter and reuse your old valve (and impress your friends).

Now that you have nice new grommets and valves/elbows in your 2005-2006 Jeep 4.0, go out and enjoy driving it.

A brand new part in what looks to be a 20 year old package. But then again, the package only helps to hold the bag down in the receptacle. Thanks for sharing your experiment.

What another hose out the back ? I had the same trouble and the parts guys didn’t know

I assume you mean the hose from the PCV valve to the intake? If so, just a regular piece of fuel hose should work. I'd guess 3/8 but you'll have to check that.

This has all been very useful information as I am in the process of replacing both front and back in my 2005 tj 4.0. (I suspect a clogged rear elbow.. It looks original, and I’m blowing a little oil out both front and back. Not bad, but it shouldn’t be happening 🤞.) I’m using the exact parts you’ve shown, and all is good so far. BUT… After putting the grommets in, I’m have a really, really, REALLY hard time getting the elbows into the grommets. WD40, soapy water, oil, nothing seems to help. Is there something I’m missing? Should I be using heat, cold, stretching the grommets, (a hammer, ha?) anything like that? I’m open to suggestions! Thanks!

A little heat from a heat gun... especially one with temperature controls...and silicone spray always helps me out.

You're not going to break anything pushing hard.

I just used a drop of oil on the bottom of the elbow and worked it into place. It took some pressure and twisting, but they went in.

Twist and wiggle it with a little oil and it should go right in. It will take some force though.

I ordered a new breather tube from autozone (crown auto part) and now there is a strong hissing sound coming from it. Might have to try this.
