I have a 1998 TJ that I bought new a long time ago. It came with a soft top.

I picked up a hardtop today for $400. It seemed like a good deal but now I am starting to wonder. The wiring harness was cut on the end that is supposed to connect to the wiper and defrost. I have not been able to figure out the part number or where to get one of these. I am sure they are discontinued but I need some help locating one. I see wiring harnesses for hardtop but they seem to be for the Jeep body. I need that, too.

Also, the rear window didn't come with it and it looks like that will cost more than the hardtop once I buy the wiper motor and other parts. Sigh. Hopefully I can get this thing complete without spending over $1000. Any help would really be appreciated.

I have the harness & glass (with wiper but no defrost) on a pretty well busted up hard top. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to sell it as-is or not, but if I can't, maybe I can scavenge parts for you. As far as the harness goes, just wire up your own connector.

$400 is a screaming deal if its not cracked.

Yes, if you are willing to sell some of the parts I need I that would be really helpful! I also need some hinge parts if you have them. The top has the hinges attached to them, but it doesn't have the parts of the hinge that would be on the other side of the glass. I guess it would be the "nut" that screws onto the hinge to hold the glass to the hinge. I don't really want to buy new hinges unless I have to.

If you would be willing to take some pictures of what the inside of the glass looks like with the wiper motor and also the squirt nozzle that would be helpful. I'm sort of going through this blind and and trying to figure out all the parts I am going to need.

Thanks!

Does any know what parts 9 and 10 are in this diagram?

#9 Pictures and Part # are attached. It’s for screwing your hardtop into the tub. It’s supposed to help with getting a nice uniform seal that’s tight all the way around.

#10 appears to be a bumper that’s placed between the roll bar or sound bar and the top of the hard top. My guess it helps to prevent rattling between the hard top and the tub

These parts aren’t needed at all and your hardtop functions perfectly fine without them. They are more there to help with sealing and noises

Thanks for the pictures. That helps. I guess I can stuff some socks between the soundbar and hardtop if it rattles. :)

One more question for anyone that knows. I have not bought a rear window yet but I noticed all the pictures have two holes which look like they have something to do with the defrost. I currently do not have anything that would go in those holes nor do I know what I would even look for. Does anyone know what that is called? Nothing shows up in the jeep parts manual.

I didn’t see it mentioned but #9 is the mucket seal. Although right or wrong, I’ve only ever used them with my soft top.

I have my hard top installed. My soft doors do not close well. The seals don't go in the door frame in the rear upper corners. I ended up buying a set of full doors that I have to paint. I started out with a $400 top that I thought just needed a $100 piece of glass for the rear. The paint for the full doors alone has put be back almost $800!!!!!! The full doors were only $450 but I had to buy new handles and a few other pieces. Buying the wiper motor, wiper, gas springs, new hinges defrost wires, plus wiring harnesses has put this at some cost that I am scared to add up.

But one good thing, the rear glass was essentially free. The place I ordered it from sent me a piece with some minor scratches in the top non see through part. I could have lived with it but they sent me out a replacement and I didn't have to send back the bad piece. I am going to try to sell it and get some money back. I'm in Raleigh, NC in case anyone needs a brand new rear 1998 window that has a very minor defect.

Doors for $450 is pretty good if they aren't rusted where the window frame meets the door or on the underside.
