06 TJ Randomly Shutting Down: PCM, Age, Gremlins?

I have a 2006 Jeep wrangler Sport. For the last couple of years, she will—while I'm driving—suddenly power down for a *split second*, and then come right back up to normal. A few times the check engine light has come on (0431 and 0633), but then it will either go away the next day or "reset" when she randomly does the thing when she kinda stops running for half a second on the road.

Twice recently, she just stopped entirely while I was driving. Once I was going into second and she just shut down. Dashboard lights started flickering (check engine, anti-theft), and steering wheel locked up. So I threw her into neutral, turned her "off," removed and reinserted the key, and she started back up.

Second time, I was at a stop sign, went into first to take off, she shuts down. No lights flickering this time, but the steering wheel locked up. It's like she thinks she's being stolen. I brake, try to start her, and nothing. No lights, no turnover, nothing. I took the key out and tried to restart her two times, and nothing. Not even lights in the dash. Then on the third time, she started.

Oh! and one time my gas tank said it was less than a quarter full, then she did the half-second shutdown thing while I was driving and suddenly she said there was more than half a tank.

For clarity, 1) I had the PCM replaced a few years ago, and wires/leads all look good, 2) I probably have the slightest exhaust leak but nothing that seems emergent, and 3) she has a lifter tick that's 'Tell Tale Heart'-level maddening.

Right now my mechanic wants to replace the crank sensor to start to troubleshoot the issue.

And that's the story. Anyone else run into ANYTHING like this before?

New to the forum and appreciative of any insight.

The steering wheel cylinder locked or you lost power steering.

The steering wheel lock out is manual IIRC, so that would at least point to something going on with the column/ignition cylinder hardware.

Losing power steering would happen with a engine shutdown due to the belt driven power steering pump.

Are you sure the wheel locked, or was it just hard to turn because you lost PS? You have to turn the wheel half a turn to lock it. Is your key excessively worn?

Was the PCM a Wranglerfix one? If not, you still have the crap OEM design. One of the failure modes is shutting off while driving. Did you also loose the gauges when it shut off?

Came here to say this :) The @Wranglerfix pcm solved my somewhat similar issues and revived my shitbox.

@XrCyst

It sounds like you have a six speed manual transmission. Here is a YouTube link that covers the common failures…
