Looking for rear bumper recommendations

I will say I bought one of those Bestop tub mounted tire carriers a year or two ago when they had them on sale and discontinued. I threw it up in the attic in case I was to change things up down the road sometime.

It was hard for me not to jump on that one, but I held out to get an exogate eventually. I can’t say if one or the other is better or not, I just wanted to limit anything that could add depth to my LJ, however slight.

Is your tire tight against the snubbers? I can't tell by the pics.

I went with the MORryde and really like it. I have the same color jeep so here's what yours would look like minus the different bumper.

Same (but morryde) probably waiting until I get my 33's to install it because I think it would look weird with my stock sized spare
I actually don’t know which of the two I have, haha. But I doubt it looks weird since it’s just beefier hinges and the tailgate plate. You reuse the oem carrier. I’d argue it looks fairly close to stock to any non-tj owner.

Replacing my Swing out Carrier. I Just ordered my Morryde HD Tailgate Carrier from Extreme Terrain and took advantage of the Coupon Code for 50.00 off my next purchase of 299.00 with Shipping and Tax part of that 299.00. I'm thinking of Sliders or Flat fenders Next. Wifes Jk has a swing out which has a swing out. She likes it. I don't.

I think they're both the same, just with a different name on it from what I've seen. And yeah that's true, I just wasn't sure if I would like having the large black plate behind the hinges especially when it's not covered by the tires. I might just install it today and see how it looks

Not all swing out carriers are bad. I've been running the UCF hybrid steel/aluminum bumper, going into the sixth year now.

It:
- weighs in at 78lbs
- took stress off the tub/hinges
- functions flawlessly (when you open the tailgate, the spare tire easily opens with it)
- gave me an improved departure angle (i.e. Sucked the rear in 2-3"
- improved my rear window visibility
- allows for towing and carrier use

In the years I've been running it, and dozens of trail rides, I've had no rattles, even with a 100 lb tire/wheel combination. The only issue I've ever had is, once, I had to tighten the bearing retainer nut. That said, it's a pricey bumper today (I bought it at around $900) and I'd probably just go the MORyde route, with a separate bumper.

Everyone, wow, thank you, SO very helpful! And just to confirm, these two tailgate reinforcements allow (1) the larger spare to fit and not wobble or squeak; (2) Allow the 3rd brake light to still be functional; (3) and not too hard to install?

This is great! Thanks for the pic! Is it possible to keep the 3rd brake light or no? I notice you don’t have yours on there.

The MORryde system comes with an extension bracket that fits between the tailgate and tire carrier which moves the spare up and out to allow it to fit larger tires and to clear the rear bumper. With my bumper having a cutout that sits lower in the center, I didn't need to use the bracket. Use of the bracket allows for the factory 3rd brake light to be mounted, it won't fit without the bracket. I wanted to keep the spare as low and as close to the tailgate as possible and even then I still had to extend the snubbers using hockey pucks that I cut and shaped to match the shape of the snubbers to look factory. I plan on getting a 3rd brake light that fits behind the spare, just haven't dont it yet.

This will give you an idea of how low a 33" tire sits without using the extension bracket. My bumper sits about 7/8" higher than the factory bumper to eliminate the gap between the tub and the bumper.

Thanks so much, helpful.

I also looked at the 02 TJ I am selling and noticed that the tire mount on it, seems to be a bit different , I will post a pic later. It also has 33's on it, but seems to be sturdier, I may swap them out.

Here is a link to the 02 Jeep I am selling in Kansas City area if anyone is interested.
