RCV versus Revolution and others

My wife has 20k miles or so on her RCVs so far (hub kit so probably closer to 10k miles spinning). No issues so far.

I also run them on my Dana 60. No issues there either. But only 2k miles on them (probably closer to 400 miles spinning off road).

Keep them greased.

EDIT: I lied. Just looked back I’m closer to 10k miles.

15k miles on mine without a hiccup.

I’ve never seen this kind of break on a standard chromoly shaft.

One difference is that the RCV’s are a constant velocity joint. So if you are running at full lock, the front wheel turns at a constant speed, rather than speeding up and slowing down as with a u-joint.

My understanding is that the speeding up and slowing down is part of what causes the u-joints to break but I am not 100% sure.
I've broken 2 front shafts before and one was when I had the wheel cranked all the way to one side. I'd say it's like anything else you just have to choose. I'll keep my cromo shafts and Longfield u-jointed shafts as spares if I ever break the RCV shafts.

It’s a contributor to joint stress and can lead to breakage. As we all know, many things can contribute, conditions depending.

Chop gets even worse the tighter you turn with a typical u-joint. New technology in CV’s has allowed them to almost keep up with bigger joints that will support 50 degrees of angle, even bigger joints, like the Spidertrax stuff combined with their knuckles can support up to 60 degrees.

Straight axles w/ unis are still superior when it comes to turning radius and joint life.

My theory is they screwed up the outer nut torque value which doesn't suck the flange on the bell in tight enough against the back of the unit bearing. Without that, the stub shaft gets subjected to much higher loads than even the stock stub shaft. At 175, the stock stub never twists off and it is a lower strength alloy. At the RCV 125, the friction level is much lower, flange rotates, stub twists off.
 
Theoretically won't that keep traction without breaking traction every revolution? Now, if that traction is realized I don't know...
Although small and having a low impact for most of us rec wheelers, any disruption caused by u-joint/wheel chop will echo and travel through the entire front suspension, axle (straight axle), and steering wheel.

Depends. Most popular stuff is the Spidertrax 1480 “sized,” joints and 45 spline stubs which are good for 50 degrees.

Now, more teams are running the Spidertrax prototype 1550 sized joints and 45 splined stubs with 55 degrees of steering angle.

And how is the wheel chop on these most popular shafts with u joints? Do you see what I'm getting at?
