Second battery in stock air box location?

Looked around and didn't see any photos. Anyone here set up that way?

I'm installing a THOR cowl intake this weekend to free up some space. I've got an blue top and a battery isolator/all the wiring for the project.

At this point I'm just trying to determine how mount/strap the battery in place.

Thanks, but not what I'm looking for. I just installed a THOR cowl intake yesterday and have a nice open area where my stock intake used to be. Was hoping someone else had done the same and installed a second battery in the airbox location.

I'll just get some misc. aluminum parts and try to fab something up.
 
So far, loving it. There’s a bit more pep and a lot more growl.

I’ll have a better idea tomorrow though when I’m doing my standard commute. I monitor my intake temps via my scan gauge and it looks to be around 30 degrees cooler.

There’s a bit of a whistle around 3k, but I can live with that.
 
I was considering this very idea. Doing a cowl intake to make room for a second battery my aux relay/fuse panel. I'll be watching this thread.
 
An Optima group 34 style battery will fit on it’s side on top of the drivers side inner fender right behind the washer fluid bottle or in my case, the auto tranny computer.
I installed one on my 03 Rubicon. I had to relocate the cruise control servo to the ABS tray but other than that, I installed a generic battery tray and the battery fit like it was supposed to be there
 
I love the idea of the THOR cowl intake, but hate those cone type filters... If they had a way to use a stock type filter I’d be all over it.

I've got my compressor mounted in that spot. However I'll take a look and see if it makes more sense to move my compressor to the driver side and mount the second battery in that location.

Honestly... I don't have the time, patience, and maybe/maybe not the fabrication skill, but what I would rather have is a sealed cavity in the cowl and a stock filter, with a River Raider snorkel.

At some point I might attempt it.

So I messed around and adding a second battery to where the intake was... just doesn't seem that practical. At least not for an Optima group 34 battery. I just ordered the Smittybilt dual battery tray... only to find it won't ship until the middle of December. ....... I might have to fabricate my own.

On another note, I'm really digging the cowl intake. At first... I drove it harder because I liked hearing the sound. After mellowing out on the skinny pedal I'm seeing a much better MPG lift than I'd expect. First tank was lower MPG. Second tank with me being a bit more relaxed I saw a slight increase. Third tank driving normal again... I saw an increase to 14.4mpg up from around 11.5mpg(mixed city/highway).

That's on 35x12.50's and 5.13's. Based on what my ScanGuage is telling me, I think on a longer highway trip I should see closer to 17-18mpg. Really hoping that's the case.

Interesting. I wonder if there was a measurable flow increase or temperature difference and it took your computer a little while to lean and adjust accordingly.

I did a mockup of a cowl intake into the factory air box a few years ago, it's pretty straightforward...

A flange can be added to the side of the factory box to accept an air duct. In this photo the flange is held in place with a vise-grip (I said it was a mockup :)). The hole in the front of the air box where the air intake horn normally is gets plated over (a piece of plastic or metal bolted in place over the hole and sealed).

Then a flexible air duct can be routed to the cowl:

I did this as part of my "Cool Cowl" cold air intake cowl panel project to show how a cowl intake could be implemented with the stock air box.

There is definitely a measurable difference in intake temps, not sure about increase in flow. I’m always skeptical about performance gains from intake changes. They never seem to be what manufacturers say, so I just wasn’t expecting these results. I’m guessing temperature might play the bigger role here. Regardless, I’m happy with it!
