Is this a bad AC unit noise? Or something else?

Sounds like a bad barring on the pulley.

I tried to just replace the baring once....... failed miserably. Ended up buying a new compressor.

I can tell you that needs to be fixed immediately. Once that baring freezes you are dead in the water.

You really only have two choices. Fix the compressor or eliminate the ac and add the pulley that non ac jeeps have.

Where did the click at end come from? I tried to look but I didn't see clutch even flicker when I heard noise, but my eyes are not as they used to be either. Just looks like clutch is not engaging to turn compressor. That could be low freon which in turn your low pressure switch would be preventing it from doing. And are you referring to grinding sound in beginning? Is it indeed coming from a/c comp./clutch ? If so I'd say clutch sounds a little done. Or is it the alternator right below it.

Thanks for the help guys! I ended up bypassing it to make sure the ac unit was the issue and it looks like it was.
