Sidemarker suggestions for flat fenders?

Hi all, new here - so please let me know if this belongs in a different sub-forum...

I'm looking for suggestions to replace the front side lights. When I installed the flat fender flares last year - the ones I bought didn't have lights built in. I'm thinking I can mount something just underneath (see pic for reference) but want something easy to wire, and hopefully that doesn't have to drill into the flares.

I'm assuming I'll need these installed before my next inspection, no?

Thanks!

I just failed my state inspection for not having marker lights and blinkers on the side of my vehicle. I bought a set of $15 motorcycle turn signals that I'm attempting to wire up. If it works out I'll let you know and post up the info.

That's what I'm afraid of - don't know if Texas rules are different than Maryland.. That'll be awesome if you can post after install... thanks!

CA didn't care, VA didn't care, MD pretty much told me half of my build was illegal. I'd consult your local laws. I know Genright sells an LED ket for their flat fenders that have a marker on the front as well as under the fender for the side. I'm cheap though and don't need the front so I'm going to wire up these motorcycle lights and it should work out.

Where did you get those flares from? Been looking for something similar. How wide are they? Fit properly? Would you recommend them? And cost? I've seen several LED light kits on Amazon. May all be the same, just from a different vendor. All were pretty cheap. Like $20 or so.

$15 with shipping. Works perfectly and maintains all stock functions. I mounted them directly on top of my flat fenders

Those look like the bulbs are conventional incandescents which is why they worked perfectly. Most LED side marker lights cause problems since they only conduct electricity in one direction but the TJ's side marker circuit requires the bulbs to conduct electricity in both directions. The problems with LED side marker lights happens when the headlights turn on which reverses the voltage direction through the lights which is when they stop working normally.

Someone just reported some suitable LED lights are available with a built-in bridge rectifier that fixes that issue so they work without problem whether the headlights are on or off.

So I was just running 2 wire LEDs. They worked as a turn signal but I failed for not having marker lights while the headlights are on. Now I’ve got them both. I’ll post up photos shortly. Can videos be posted on tapatalk?

Nice rig! Thanks for the pics... was definitely curious about how it looks mounted on top..

Just another option. I think these are JK lights but I used CJ7 lights on mine, but you get the idea. Just look at that unused space under your headlines begging for jk/CJ turns..... 😁

The problem is some states require lights on the side (or are visible from the side). That’s why I had to add a second set on top of my fenders, because my front ones alone wouldn’t pass state inspection.

move the little tiny ones inside the wheel well in the upper left.... and you would be golden (y) I had just my CJ turns in PA and passed since they stick out 3/4" you could see the turn from the side i guess.

I get it, I used to live in Pennsylvania home of the inspection which required me to have overly big flat fenders which I hate. Now living in Washington State where there is no state inspection I'll have to redo.... always being held back by "the man" 😁

To use LEDs in the turn signal and sidemarker positions, you need a 3 wire turn signal/running light in the sidemarker. The turn signal and running lights need to get connected to the stock wiring, and the 3rd wire has to be grounded. LEDs cannot be run in both positions with a 2 wire setup unless significant alterations are made to other wiring.

I am in NY and I am not running the side marker lights and I haven’t had any issues with passing
Inspection.

Just wondering has anybody tried to wire up two pair of LEDs to the front wires and just cap off the side wiring? Since these are so low voltage just wondering if that would work....

That would basically accomplish the same thing as wiring a bulb to the sidemarker wiring. The splices connect into the same wires. So yes it’s possible, but it could mean more work. Check out the wiring diagrams in the FSM to see what I’m talking about:
