Trailer sizes

I've been running this trailer for 10 years. It's a 2015 custom-built Kaufman 20' / 10k, with a 102" wide deck, no dovetail, and drive over fenders which I built. I've also done a custom tongue lock, custom ramps with an expanded metal deck which allows me to easily pull the motorcycles on, and a vice mount on the fenders. It's been a fun project. The box contains something like 1000 pounds of spare parts, tools, fluids, jacks, and such.

With the rig on it, it tips the scales at 10,600 pounds...

And despite running 14 ply / G rated (Edit: Correction 12 Ply F-Rated) Carlyse tires, it blows tires with regularity - usually when making the trip to Moab at 80. It's simply overloaded.

So I've now ordered a new custom Kaufman Deluxe. Same 20 ft, 102" width, drive over fenders (which I'm reluctantly having them build), but a 15k pound, 8 lug beast. For reference in the context of this thread, the build cost at about $8,600.

Should be done in 2 or 3 weeks, at which point I'll make the trek over to SC to pick it up.

Other than my capacity issue, I love this thing and am sorry to be giving it up. It would work well for anyone towing a normal Jeep - just not the 6400 pound pig I drag around... :(

I've always wondered about your tire issues... My trailer is rated for 7K and I'm pushing 6700 lbs. Now I don't have as many miles on my trailer as you do I've never had issues with blow outs. I'd have to go look at what load range my tires are but I know they aren't as heavy duty as yours. As I said before I wished in hindsight that I'd had it built for 10K capacity instead of 7k but my only option now would be to throw some 5K axles under it but as pointed out it would change it's built capacity which could cause issues.

What trailers and size trailers are you all using for your TJ?

No experience with this company, but this is the closest I found to the ideal Trailer(steel). The width is great, and you can choose your length. Id add the dove/beaver tail. Custom seems like the best route, but the most expensive one. If you go custom look for Blaine's trailer description that's the blueprint ill be following if I go custom. Here's One I found on fbm that's pretty sweet.

I have a dovetail on my trailer and will tell you from experience that it isn't a good idea for a trailer you're planning on towing down dirt roads that might be unlevel. I've drug the rear of my trailer more times than I can count and ruined the clearance lights on the rear multiple times. And others have discussed this with in trailer threads also. It's not a good idea.

And as an OLD guy when it comes to loading and unloading a rig I will say that my next trailer will be a tilt deck so I don't have to deal with ramps...

This has gotten very popular over the last 5 or so years. You can't find a toy hauler RV that will support the weight of a Jeep.

We have friends who go that have diesel pushers. They are nice but they have nothing to drive when we go out to eat or get supplies.

The truck camper one is my brothers (35' trailer) and the 5th wheel (45' trailer) set up is a good friend's.

It is awesome. This is their third.

Mark & Jen Wheat are great people. I almost had to fly in to an airport this morning 2 hours away due to the UPS crash last night at SDF. They offered to pick me up so we could leave on time today for an event this weekend.

Your dually hauler is badass! I was checking out the build thread, very cool!

My open trailer is a custom built 18' 10K steel deck flatbed with 6K Dexter axles. It weighs 2900 and change with a full tongue box.

When I customized the trailer, I wanted something long enough to fit my CCSB Powerstroke on it if I ever needed.

I've always worried about an enclosed trailer as far as being able to climb in or out of my Jeep since I have enough issues with my open trailer.

Nice.

If it is anything like my ‘05 6.Blow was, it’d be needed all the time. I couldn’t sell that truck fast enough…. I still have nightmares from it.

And I was foolish enough to think the 6.4 was better...

Nope, nothing at all like those trucks. This is a '01 7.3. Just a HPOP oring failure.

Miss the 7.3 PS they were a good engine..
