Novak Conversions Jeep Wrangler TJ engine mounts

What did you do to your TJ today?

Yep exactly lol. VEVOR by chance??

Yeah 😂. My buddy bought it to regear his jkur, and we ended up just stacking sockets in the tube. He gave it to me after we finished regearing his. Its been sitting on the shelf in the garage since november, and i dropped it off with my machinist buddy monday. Has about .010 clearance on each side now

Yeah I haven't used 5th gear in years. I can still hit like 85 in 4th though!

It's super nice having a reason to get a press... I've already used it for other things since buying it that I otherwise wouldn't have justified a press for. I got the HF one with one of those "20% off anything" coupons they email me all the time

I remember cruising at 75 MPH two summers ago and by the fall my engine had pretty bad leak down tests… with the 2.4 the rpm was easily 3.3k at that speed, I might toasted my engine which is why I had to rebuild it

Oh you have the 4 banger. I have the 6.... but I have no qualms running 3500-3800 RPM down the highway. And neither does my tired engine, apparently. Maybe I'm just lucky

yessir, it honestly is a decent rig, kinda crazy to think it’s the same engine that’s in PT cruisers LOL. The engine was rebuilt by a shop through the PO when I bought it, I don’t think they did the best job. Ended up rebuilding it as my first rebuild ever! Might have to make a thread for that as well since 2.4’s don’t have a lot of support.

Nice! That's awesome, hopefully it lasts a long time. I've thought about picking up a cheap 4.0 core to rebuild to have a backup, I've never done it before either. but hard to make the money available. I know I'll wish I did if my engine shits the bed.

Speaking of

What did it cost to regear? I have a 2003 2.4 with a 5 speed and a gobi roof rack and tent. It really struggles in 5th gear on the highway tbh.

I’m setting at about $1000 including tools, fluids, etc.
The Yukon gear set was $545 from Summit. I decided to buy clam shell bearing puller. It’s the Bestool brand, $160 on Amazon.
Also picked up a 12 ton shop press from summit but could’ve gotten one cheaper from harbor freight.

I know what you mean about the highway lol. Man, it’s like driving a new vehicle. She drives great now. Drove a couple exits in the highway and I can now use all 6 gears. It’s awesome! It never struggled. A strong headwind used to really make those squirrels work lol.

Definitely get it done when you’re able. Even if you have a shop do it. It’s well worth it.

Buying the tools and trying to do this is something I've always wanted to do. The older I get, the less I don't want to do a whole lot myself, mainly because I'd rather spend the time with my kids and wife; yup I still enjoy her company, sometimes, after 16 years. I can't justify it since a good friend has an off road shop and does it for cost.

Got to love having those good friends. Cheers to the wives! We’re at 16 years this August 😀.
It took me 3 days instead of 2 because I gotta stop shop at dinner time. Not too bad but I would’ve had a shop do it if my budget was different.

Dude. I know lol. I’ve spent the pest month ordering everything. Waiting sucks. I have zero patience.

Agreed. Just want it to be done. Mannn I started in like mid January and had a bunch of shit happen to make it take forever 🤣 and now that it's done I am waiting on unrelated parts to drive it. This week though!!! I bet the synchros on 5th gear are nice and smoothhh

New water pump ,thermostat, serpentine belt and new coolant….. so it was time to take it for a trip down to the beach to make sure that everything is running as it should.

If you have mechanical inclination you can do it! I took my time and mainly followed the FSM procedure and some videos. The only things I had a shop do was machine the head and check my bore diameters. Ring install really isn’t hard, just gotta use assembly lube on everything. Checking bearing clearances with plastic gauge was the hard part. I removed all old gasket/ RTV by hand using scotch brite pads which took forever but worked really well. Only mistake I made was I accidentally damaged the rear main seal on install… should have ran it first before installing the transmission.

I honestly should make a thread guide because there really isn’t much support on the 2.4’s. Most of the videos I’ve watched have been people working on PT Cruisers.

Nice. Did that and few other things for my cooling system a few weeks ago. Checked it yesterday and all was still good. So far the temps seem to be about 15 degrees cooler but hard to say as it isn’t hot out yet. Test will be this summer.

The belt is slipping some so going to get a different one. Has a York for air and the adjustment is all they way out.

That's funny. Cute jeep dog. I was actually referencing the young man in your backup cam.😉

Lol, I went back through the pics and see it now on the screen! Great catch! ; it's funny because that dog is obsessed with stealing socks..... awesome dog otherwise, love him to death, but heaven forbid you leave a pair of socks on the floor.......

Kiddo enjoys the Jeep too, and most days has both socks :)

Where did you mount the back-up camera?

I used a camara kit that came with a license plate bracket that mounts behind the license plate. It's slightly offset but works great. The super wide-eyed cam sees everything, and the head unit also includes options to set the parking lines if you want..... I just like having the cam as I can't see shit with a 35" tire mounted on the back, so this is a world of improvement when simply getting groceries.

The $2200 estimate you got wasn't bad. Granted the shop had the equipment, but you did learn a skill.

I paid $2,300 for eaton elockers, 5.13 gear install, assembling and installing chromo axle shafts f/r (which, in hindsight I should have assembled the front u-joints myself and saved a couple bucks), and drilling and running the wiring out of the housings for the elockers. I wired them up myself via the SPod sourceLT switch panel. This was with me supplying the lockers, gears, and axle shafts.
