What is behind this part? Evaporator core?

How about a circle around which part you're trying to identify?

What engine? Doesn't look like a 4.0 so my SWAG would be the timing belt cover.

Edit - wait a sec...that's under the passenger footwell. I think that's the airbag controller on the left? Maybe someone hacked in a hole to replace the heater core or ac evaporator like you said. Probably easier to pull the dash then use that hole.

Sorry the plastic cover with soared off edges at the center. It is the passenger footwell, 2001 4.0
 
Well that's the heater box... usually there is no door...

Anything in particular not working or just satisfying your curiosity?

Also not sure if that door would actually work as intended...you can see the fittings on the firewall...the two cores run about a 45 degree angle through the box...not sure that hole would allow either to be removed.

Tell us what is broken and what you are trying to do about it. To replace the heater core the whole dash comes off. If that isn't the problem describe what is.
