Changing out carpet, order of operations, what to do while I'm in there...

I got some BedRug front & back on order today, along with some Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Plus. There's what looks like a superficial rust spot around where the driver's heel sits on the carpet and the carpet wore through. I'll wire wheel the spot and hit it with the Eastwood, then carpet over. I'm not concerned about the color of the tub under the carpet. I hear I might want to paint or primer over the Eastwood. And then I figured while I have the seats out, I'll raise them 1-1/2".

What else should I do while the carpet is out? I'll be giving the console a good scrub, but I don't see a reason to remove it yet. Should I, for any reason, while I'm at it? What else should I consider (other than remediating any rust spots) while the carpet's out? I'll eventually get a transfer case cable shift kit, upper shift boot, some audio & wiring upgrades, but nothing else I can think of that needs the carpet pulled.

Thanks forum.

I highly recommend installing some heat insulation. I really like my Bedrug, but it has almost no insulation for heat. When I only had it installed on my 06 my right leg would cook while driving even with the A/C blowing out the lower vents. It was near intolerable to drive on warm days. I installed a layer of insulation under the BedRug and it made a huge difference. I used CSI 25070 insulation.

I agree. While you have everything out, put in some heat shield. I also did mass backed carpet for sound dampening.

It's a good time to do some sound dampening, or some heat insulation. Or, if you plan on wiring any accessories, to run those wires under the rug or under the seats, etc.

Thanks guys. I'll get some heat insulation ordered. There are a couple small pieces that come with the front BedRug section, but they look like barely enough to cover the sides of the tunnel ahead of the front seats.

How did you adhere the insulation? Self-adhering? 3M weatherstrip adhesive?

Found some foil-backed, self-adhesive foam insulation and put an order in.

Replace all the nylon bushings on your seats
I did mine and WOW, they dont rattle and move like new

Jeep Wrangler TJ LJ 1998-2006 Support Bushings Seat Bushings Direct Replacement

Replace your drain plugs also in the floorpan

I wire wheeled the minimal surfzce rust I saw, Rustoleum Professional high zinc oil based silver can sealcoated the floor, then sound deadened it, also the wheel wells after this pic.

Thanks, ordered some from Amazon! My seats rattle a little, so I'm curious if new bushings will tighten them up.

I know I want to go to a cable shift for the transfer case, so I've decided to do that at the same time. I just put in an order for the 241 cable on the Savvy website. Hopefully there are no hangups there........

In fact I didn't order self-adhesive insulation, because I couldn't find any that had two layers of foil. I went with 5mm SmartSHIELD foam core and I'll install with foil tape. I remember thinking my right leg was feeling the heat on the drive home from purchase, but I guess I forgot all about it.

Good choice to do the TCase cable shifter at the same time. And you might want to remove the center console for cleaning. It’s just 4 bolts IIRC.

Yeah, I've given it more thought and that's probably what I'll do. Give it a good Simple Green scrub and spray-down. I'm not running cables for audio yet, but I'll probably leave some paracord between the insulation & the carpet to pull things through.

So if I'm removing the console... I should probably replace the holey upper shift boot while I'm at it. I've used Redline Goods before and they're decent; there's a bunch on Etsy; any recommendations?

I used to have the NSG370 transmission. It seems there is a write-up somewhere on the forum for seeing an upper boot. 😬

Yeah, I've heard the metal boot frame can be eh, difficult to come by, I guess? I need to get my 3d printer up & running. Something like that should be ripe for printing.

I wonder if this is the thread you were thinking of... also, for the lower/inner rubber shift boot, I read somewhere that a boot from a 1979-1993 Mustang (Drake p/n D9ZZ-7138) can be modified to work. I'm not sure if I'll need one yet.

You’ll know if you need that lower boot when you get there! I’ve sold all my stuff unfortunately. eBay and Davey’s Jeeps can probably help you find one. The Mustang boot has worked for folks. It’s much cheaper. Main thing is to block the heat from the tranny.

Yes, that’s the thread on sewing your own upper boot.
