I have noted a number of solutions to this issue on this site but they are older closed threads and not quite what I was looking for. I did see one where someone cut their snubber down but I wanted a more stock finished look. I thought I would post my $10 solution on my 2003 TJ with a Smittybilt spare tire rack and bumper assembly. When I mounted the rack none of the snubbers on the tailgate matched up and they were too tall anyway. I noted that the bottom center snubber under the tailgate wasn't as tall as the ones on the tailgate itself. That one actually contacted the bottom of the rack. I ordered Crown part #J136587 from one of many suppliers which was 1.62" tall which was close to the same height as the center snubber on my jeep was and picked up an allen head bolt 1x5/16x20. I took off all the tailgate snubbers and bolted the new one in the right top bolt hole that held the original spare tire rack in place. The bolt used for that is smaller than the actual spare tire rack bolt holes. That's why you need the above mentioned new bolt and it has to be an allen head so you can tighten it down since the original bolts had hexagon heads. After installation I closed the tire swing gate and bingo...a perfect fit and no more wobble! See attached photos.

I hope it helps, Smittybilt's spare tire carriers aren't known for their strength or holding up for long.

Edit: I hesitated posting this photo because you are new here and I didn't want to seem like we're piling onto you due to your Smittybilt tire carrier. We're really not but better to know that they can have problems so I decided to post this photo for you. Keep a close eye on yours, especially where its pivot post support is welded to the bumper. That's where this one failed. Click on the photo to make it large enough to see how it failed.

Thanks for the info. Mine has held up for several years even without the support and everything is still tight. You're not the first one to mention the pivot point problem but I will keep an eye on it. I mainly wrote the article because of the support problem across the board for any tire carrier like this. Given enough time off road they could all run the risk of breaking. I just thought this was an easy and economical solution for any swing out tire carrier, regardless of brand. It also takes care of the latch rattle problem.

If the tire wobbles on the rack, then the snubber should be between the tire and the rack.
Seems to me, putting the snubber on the body adds pressure to the rack's pivot point.
